With the passing of the Earl of Halsbury, I decided to update my list
of peers without heirs.

Most of these titles will become extinct. I hold out hope for any
peer born 1970 and later (making them 41 years old and younger this
year). For peers born before, there is much less hope and I think we
can write off most if not all of those titles. However, we can never
say never-- perhaps one will pull a Cholmondeley!

Here is the list (year of birth of peer in parenthesis):

ROYAL DUKE

York (b. 1960)

MARQUESS

Abergavenny (b. 1955)-- will become an Earldom

EARLS

Attlee (b. 1956)
Clancarty (b. 1952)
Dunraven and Mount-Earl (b. 1939)
Haig (b. 1961)
Kitchener of Khartoum (b. 1919)
Lovelace (b. 1951)
Norbury (b. 1967)
Pembroke & Montgomery (b. 1978)*^
Shaftesbury (b. 1979)*
Woolton (b. 1958)

VISCOUNTS

Alanbrooke (b.1932)
Craigavon (b. 1944)
Gough (b. 1941)
Mills (b. 1956)
Simon (b. 1940)

BARONS

Balfour of Inchrye (b. 1924)
Banbury of Southam (b. 1953)
Birdwood (b. 1938)
Burnham (b. 1968)
Croft (b. 1949)
de Villiers (b. 1940)
Gladwyn (b. 1930)
Glendevon (b. 1952)
Glendyne (b. 1960)
Graves (b. 1960)
Greenhill (b. 1924)
Hawke (b. 1995)*
Kingsale (b. 1958)-- may or may not have an heir
Lawrence (b. 1937)
Lyell (b. 1939)
Machperson of Drumochter (b. 1979)*
May (b. 1965)
Melchett (b. 1948)
Milner of Leeds (b. 1959)
Northbrook (b. 1954)-- will become a baronetcy
Rennell (b. 1978)*
Robertson of Oakridge (b. 1975)*
Sherfield (b. 1951)
Sinlclair of Cleeve (b. 1953)
Strang (b. 1922)
Trimlestown (b. 1930)
Wardington (b. 1925)

*--peer born 1970 and later-- still hope for heirs
^--Pembroke & Montgomery won't become extinct but would be inherited
at this point by the Earl of Carnarvon

There are also two baronies (Braye and Willoughby de Eresby) were
there are co-heiresses and co-heirs (respectively) so these titles
could become abeyant.

Finally, as it stands now, there may be one peer gained as the
Lordship of Nairne would split from the Viscountcy of Mersey.

Note: this list does not take into account titles were there may be be
an heir or two but they are unlikely to produce future heirs. That
list is for another day.

I am not sure if it was reported to this group or not, but I think I
remember hearing that the Earl of Shaftesbury was married or became engaged
last autumn. Can anyone confirm this? If so, with a bit of luck that title
may come off the endangered list fairly soon.

Even some of them with heirs are on the verge of extinction, like
Tenby, Leighton of St Mellows, along with that Irish earldom, where
the holder used to sit as baron Lovel and Holland. Monck is another
example two brothers with no heirs and both of them nearly 50.
Shouldn't Craven be included on the list, the heir to that is pretty
old and has no issue.

Does anyone know of a list of how many peerages became extinct each
year? There are plenty of lists of peerage creations on the web, but
I've never seen a list of extinctions arranged by year.

I think that the some previous editions of Debretts used to list
peerage extinctions though I am not sure if it was by year.

marquess, you're right about the rather elderly heir (b. 1926) of
Craven.

However, my purpose in posting the information was just to list those
titles with no heirs at all. In other words, if something happened to
these peers today, those titles would become extinct.

If you look at my last sentence (from the word "Note"), you will see
that the list which would include Craven would be for another day.

Debrett's lists the title extinctions alphabetically.

The current edition lists those extinctions from 2000-2009. There
were 15 extinctions of hereditary peerages in that period.

There were no extinctions in 2010.
