I ask this question purely out of interest, and in the spirit of
clarification:

How are we defining the word 'scion' when we say for example: 'John
Smith scion of the Viscounts Hambleden.' How close or distant a
relation should the individual be to be regarded as a scion?

The online dictionary simply says: 'a descendant or heir'

Thank you

I always use scion where the person is of the family represented by
the peerage- so a Spencer-Churchill no matter how remote from the
dukedom of Marlborough remains a scion - but not when the person is
say a grandson maternally of a peer then I say "descended from" or
"grandson of".

What made me ask was that I saw the name Hicks-Beach (Michael I think)
on the cast list of a programme on television. It occurred to me that
he may be a very distant relation of the Earl St Aldwyn or a very
close one, but almost certainly a relation, hence my question.

Thanks for clearing matters up Michael.

Richard, if you saw Michael Hicks Beach he is more than a very close
relation to the Earl St. Aldwyn-- he IS the Earl (3rd Earl)!

Ha ha, it must have been a subliminal thing when I wrote 'Michael'. It
turns out his name is Nicholas.

I can understand that-- it just made me chuckle when I looked him up.

I looked up "Nicholas." Turns out, he is not even in remainder to the
Earldom. He descends from Michael Hicks (later Hicks Beach), 2nd son
of Sir Howe Hicks, 6th Bt. The 1st Earl Saint Aldwyn was the eldest
son of Sir Michael Hicks Beach, 8th Bt. (source: Burke's peerage)

Many thanks Brooke. So he's not a scion by Michael's definition...:)
