Derek Thomson was the former deputy chairman and joint managing director of DC Thomson and Co Ltd, famous for publishing the Sunday Post newspaper and the Beano and the Dandy children's comics. However, his own middle initial was "B", rather than "C". His full name was Derek Ballance THOMSON (14 VIII 1922 - 17 I 2002), and he was the third son of W(illiam) Harold THOMSON (1887 - 1975) and his wife (married 1915), Helen Irene BALLANCE (1889 - 1953).
W Harold THOMSON was the eldest son of William C THOMSON (c.1860 - before 1929) and his wife, Clara Beatrice LENG (3 XI 1865 - 1941), daughter of Sir John LENG (10 IV 1828 - 13 XII 1906), another newspaper proprietor, who was MP (Liberal) for Dundee from 1889 to 1906.
William C THOMSON was himself the eldest son of William T THOMSON (5 VI 1817 - before 1901) and his wife (married 1 III 1859), Margaret COUPER (c.1835 - 1866). He had two brothers, David Couper THOMSON (23 V 1861 - 12 XII 1954), after whom DC Thomson and Co Ltd is named; and Frederick THOMSON (10 IV 1864 - 4 IX 1917), who married Jessie Robertson WILSON (5 X 1869 - 2 X 1956).
Derek Thomson was married in 1946 to Jean FRASER (12 II 1926 - 29 VII 2016), who received a MBE in 1999. She was his second cousin, being the younger daughter of Dr (Duncan) Beaufort FRASER (1897 - ?) and his first wife (marriage registered Q1 1922 - St George Hanover Square), Gladys Couper THOMSON (2 IV 1891 - 1979), the daughter of Frederick Thomson and his wife, née Jessie Robertson Wilson.
Fiona Helen ("Fee") THOMSON is the third of the four children of Derek and Jean THOMSON. Her siblings are Keith Derek (born 5 XI 1947), Shelagh Jean (born 21 I 1950) and Elspeth Mary ("Elpy", born 1958).
