Mountbattens divorce as best of friends

So amicable was their separation — talking or seeing each other at
least once every day — friends were sure that Prince Philip’s cousin,
Lord Ivar Mountbatten, might be on the point of reconciliation with
estranged wife Penny, mother of his three daughters.
Alas, it is not to be. The couple’s marriage got into difficulties
last year and although they remained living under the same roof, they
have, I learn, quietly divorced.
Lord Ivar, a chicken farmer who supplies organic birds to Marks &
Spencer, tells me there is no chance of a reconciliation.
Lord Ivar Mountbatten and his estranged wife Penny have quietly
divorced
‘It is quite true that we see each other all the time and we really
are the best of friends. I certainly haven’t got anyone else in my
life and I don’t think Penny has either.’
Their split came after Lord Ivar’s cousin, Lord Brabourne, left his
wife, also called Penny, and his ancestral pile — Broadlands in
Hampshire — for the Bahamas, where he moved in with his mistress.
The Mountbattens have lived in Devon since buying Grade I-listed
Bridwell, near Uffculme, 14 years ago.
Ivar says his wife eventually moved to the lodge house on the estate
but has now bought herself her own home nearby. Meanwhile, he has
bought a smaller farmhouse and Bridwell is for sale for around £4
million.
A great-nephew of Earl Mountbatten of Burma, Prince Charles’s
favourite uncle who was murdered by the IRA, Ivar tells me he will
eventually move himself and all 14,000 of his hens to his new farm.
He explains: ‘I can’t go until I sell Bridwell because the new place
needs money spending on it. I actually thought I’d sold the house in
August but then the deal fell through.’
The couple’s children, Ella, 15, Alexandra, 13, and Louise, nine,
divide their time between their parents.
‘Penny and I are always in touch because of the children,’ says
Ivar. ‘Because she only lives a couple of miles away the children can
be with her part of the week and with me for the other part.’
Penny has also embarked on a new career — writing for The Lady
magazine.
