Sorry for this long question!
A member of the Nobiliana Forum posed some questions about an Irish Palliser family, which I hope someone here can answer.
He wrote:
"Clara Ingeborg Smith, daughter of Elias Anton Smith (1842–1912) and Ingeborg Anna Røvig (1839–1923), was born in Trondheim, Norway on 4 May 1878. According to an address book on Ancestry she lived at least until 1953. She was married in Trondheim on 4 May 1898 plantation owner Cecil Hunter Bury Palliser, born at Radella Estate, Ceylon on 21 December 1856, d. at [Elmswell, Stowmarke?], Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk, England 12 October 1924, son of landowner Frederick Wray Palliser, Esq. of Comrah House, Waterford, Ireland, and Emily Price, only daughter of Sir Charles Price, baronet, Wales. According to a book on the Norwegian Smith family, Palliser «belonged to and old Irish noble family». Palliser was previously married (Trondheim 3 June 1893) to Annie Amalie Kjeldsberg, b. Trondheim 23 April 1865, d. Ceylon 15 September 1895, and had the daughter Annie Emily Bury Palliser, b. Ceylon 4 September 1895. As far as I know Cecil had no children in his second marriage to Clara.
"My questions are:
- I have searched for the Palliser family without finding any reference to being noble, could anyone point to literature or other trustworthy sources which confirms (or disclaims) this information?
- Any genealogical literature about the Palliser family at all (where this branch is included)?
- Place and death of Clara Ingeborg Palliser, née Smith (who was a Cappelen descendant, hence my interest)
- Place and death (and possible marriage) of Cecil's daughter Annie Emily Bury Palliser?"
I replied that I did not know of a noble Palliser family (other than the fictional one created by Trollope), but with the help of Betham's Baronetage and Wikipeidia I learned that the great-uncle of Admiral Sir Hugh Palliser, Bt., was William Palliser, Archbishop of Cashel. Wikipedia says that the archbishop's great-grandson, John Bury (uncle of the Earl of Charleville), took the name "Palliser".
Could the people in the poster's original questions be descended from John Bury/Palliser?
As for C H B Palliser being maternal grandson of a Sir Charles Price, Bt., I replied:
"Though "Price" is a Welsh names, I don't find that any of the Price baronetcies extant in that period were "of Wales". The only "Sir Charles Price, baronet" of the period who is known to have had children was Sir Charles Price, of Spring Grove, 2nd Bt. (1776-1847). I have him listed with seven daughters, but none married a Palliser or Bury. He did have a daughter Emily (1817-1896), who married Henry Currey (d.1900) in 1845."
No daughters of the various Price baronetal families is known to have married a Palliser or a Bury, as far as I can tell.
Can anyone share any information about these questions?
