8th Earl of Strafford 1936-2016

_. The 8th Earl of Strafford (Peerage of the UK, cr 1847), died at Easton, near Winchester, 12 November, 2016. He was 80.

Thomas Edmund Byng was born 26 September, 1936, son of the 7th Earl (1904-84), by his first wife the former Maria Magdalena Elizabeth Cloete; succeeded to the peerages, 4 March, 1984; married firstly, 2 Aug 1963 (div 1981), Jennifer Mary Denise May, dau of the Rt Hon William May, MP, by whom he had issue, 2 sons and two daughters; married 2ndly, 30 May, 1981, Mrs Julia Mary Howard, former wife of Derek Howard, and daughter of Sir Dennis Pilcher, CBE.

Lord Strafford is succeeded by his elder son, William Robert Byng, styled Viscount Enfield, who was born 10 May, 1964. He married in 1994, Karen Elizabeth Lord, and has issue, 2 sons and a daughter. The elder son, Samuel, born 17 Jul 1998, is now heir to the family honours.

BYNG Thomas Edmund, Earl of Strafford, very peacefully, at home with his family at Easton, Winchester, on Saturday November 12th 2016. He is remembered with great love by his wife Judy, his four children: William, Georgia, Tara and Jamie, his three stepchildren, Emma, Polly and Daniel, and his brother Julian and his many, much-loved grandchildren. A thanksgiving service will be held at St Mary's Church, Easton, Hampshire, on 9th December, at noon. Donations, if desired, to Water Aid, c/o Richard Steel and Partners.
