...Conrad Marshall John Fisher Swan was born on May 13 1924 at Duncan, British Columbia, where his father, the local doctor, had changed the family name from Swiecicki. As a member of the Lithuanian gentry young Conrad claimed descent from a hereditary steward of King John Kasimir of Poland in 1648.
His mother came from a Baptist family which had been involved in the Hertfordshire straw-hat making industry during the early 19th century, and his maternal grandfather had been a master tailor at Folkestone....

He died 10 January 2019 and was a herald and Garter Principal King of Arms 1992-95. He was son of Maj Henry Peter SWAN (formerly Swiecicki) of BC, Canada and Colchester, Essex, and Edna Hanson Magdalen GREEN. He m 1957 Lady Hilda Susan Mary NORTHCOTE (1937-95), d of the 3rd Earl of IDDESLEIGH (1901-70) and Elizabeth Susan Angela Mary LOWNDES (d 1991), and had a son and four daus.

I had the pleasure of meeting him several times at the College of Arms, when he was York Herald (and Registrar of the College) in 1987.  He was a kind and friendly man, who was encouraging and very supportive to me whilst I was learning the trade of a genealogist and studying the wonders of heraldry.
