Any information on Ms Carmen Smith's origins ??

Great to see the daughter of the 3rd viscount Monckton of Benchley to become a Baroness. I always thought her husband, the journalist would have received a Life Barony prior.

She is 27 years old so she will become the youngest member of the House of Lords.

If I may ask, what has a 27 year old done to warrant a peerage?

Thanks.

Surprisingly on wikipedia, she is linked to an Australian Musican ! LOL.  But she is a member of the Welsh Party, but I do agree.. Far too young and in-experienced.

Here is a story from Dec 2023 about Carmen Smith's "election".  Evidently Lord (Dafydd) Wigley has announced he will retire from the Lords soon so Plaid Cymru have been allowed a Lords nomination

As Jane de Salis has pointed out on another thread Carmen Smith may be the youngest life peer but she will not be the youngest ever member of the House of Lords

The Hon. Rosa Monckton MBE will have achieved something - obtain a seat in the Lords - that her elder brother has repeatedly failed to do (thank goodness!)

Rosa Monckton is the daughter of the 2nd Viscount Monckton of Brenchley and not of the 3rd Viscount.

Rosa Monckton is the sister of the present Viscount Monckton of Brenchley. Lord Monckton is a well known climate change denier who has in the past implied that he is a member of the House of Lords and used a portcullis logo, despite having never been so, having succeeded to the title after 1999. The House of Lords authorities had to write to him to ask him to stop describing himself incorrectly as a member of the House, also publishing the letter on their website. Lord Monckton has stood in hereditary peer by-elections, receiving zero votes on at least four occasions. He did finally receive a single vote in 2022, a by-election to replace fellow climate change denier Viscount Ridley.

What’s wrong with being “ a climate change denier”? Politics has no place on this site.

100% Malcolm. It seems like most things today, if you're not on a bandwagon of the woke left, you're a denier.  Freedom under socialism supporters means follow like a sheep and do not have an opinion, or else.

I've read a number of Matt Ridley's books and wouldn't call him a
climate change denier- if you've not already, would particularly
recommend The Rational Optimist. He is fully aware of climate change
happening, but is optimistic that there are technological solutions to
mitigate it. He may be right, he may be wrong, but this is not about
politics, and it's not about denial, it's about differences of opinion
in how to deal with the issue.

Personally, I agree with him on some things and disagree on other
things. The world is shades of grey (far more than fifty!), messy,
complicated and ever-changing. Let's please not fall into the trap the
media, particularly social media, sets for us of black and white
thinking, 'woke' versus reactionary, and so on. The world is far more
complicated and interesting than that.

My post wasn't supposed to be a comment on climate change or politics. Whatever we may think of Lord Monckton's views, the point, which is quite relevant to this group, is that he pretended to be a member of the House of Lords in order to add credence to his views, in particular when giving speeches or lectures in the US. He used the term, "Member of the House of Lords without the right to speak or vote". The House authorities quite rightly asked him to stop making this claim.

Equally, the problem with Viscount Ridley is not his views, with which we may respectfully agree or disagree, but the fact that when he was a member of the House of Lords, he did not always declare financial interests in the areas on which he was speaking.

The House of Lords website (https://members.parliament.uk/members/lords?SearchText=&PartyId=&Gender=Any&MembershipStatus=3) is showing two of these sets of letters patent sealed yesterday, 6 March (Lord Banner & Lord Shamash), and two today (Lord Booth & Lord Petitgas). Lord Booth's forenames are given as Sydney John Peter, on the basis of which Companies House records give his date of birth as 22 August 1955.

As I posted to this group on 7 March, Companies House records indicate that Sydney John Peter Booth was born on 22 August 1955.
Companies House records also give the date of birth of James Gerard Jamieson as 30 September 1962.
ColinP's post on 12 February (https://groups.google.com/g/peerage-news/c/Rtq-lm-5Rlc/m/TvF0tnh8AQAJ) gave some other dates of birth.
