He was s of Sir James Richard Gardiner BAIRD 10^th Bt 1913-97 and Mabel Ann Gay Tempest c1920-2010 d of A. Algernon GILL of Toronto, Canada. He m 1984 (div 1988) Jean Margaret b 1951 d of Brig Sir Ian Liddell JARDINE 4^th Bt OBE MC 1923-82 and Priscilla Daphne 1924-2012 d of Douglas Middleton Parnham SCOTT-PHILLIPS 1892-1958 of Fairlie, Ayrshire by his 1918 m (Hants) to his 1^st w Janet Hamilton SCOTT d 1928, and had a son who succeeds him.
