The younger brother of Lord Lucan has died in South Africa, sparking speculation he may reveal details about what became of his notorious sibling from beyond the grave.

Hugh Bingham died in July, aged 78, following a long illness.

He had been living a reclusive life in a suburb of Johannesburg where he had worked as librarian to the Theosophical Society, a non-religious organisation.

Hon. Hugh Bingham, son of George Charles Patrick Bingham, 6th Earl of Lucan and Kaitlin Elizabeth Anne Dawson.

Who is heir presumptive to the Earldom of Lucan now?

Nicholas Charles Bingham (born 1943), gs of the 5th Earl, and first cousin once removed of the 8th & current Earl. He is m. with one dau and one son, Charles Nigel (born 1979), who m. in 2011, though I am not aware of any issue from this marriage. According to the Kershaw analysis, Charles is the youngest heir to the title, though there are other heirs beyond him.

With the son of the 7th Earl having proved his claim to the peerage, there is no obstacle to the heirs presumptive proving their claims on his death, assuming he has no male heir. This is because, although the 7th Earl might have had male heirs after his disappearance, they would not be legitimate(the 7th Earl not having been divorced),so they would not be eligible to succeed to the peerage.
