David Ian Liddell-Grainger, JP, DL, Baron of Ayton (territorial), died
at the Wittgensteiner Klinik, Leezen, Schwerin, Germany, 12 March
2007. He was a son of Capt. Henry H. Liddell-Grainger, JP, DL (d.
1935), of Ayton Castle, Berwickshire, by his wife Lady Muriel Felicia
Vere Bertie (d. 1981), daughter of the 12th Earl of Lindsey &
Abingdon; b. 26 Jan 1930, educated at St Peter's College, Adelaide SA,
Eton, University of London; married (1) 1957 (div. 1982), Anne,
daughter of Colonel Sir Henry Abel Smith, KCMG, KCVO, DSO, DL, of
Barton Lodge, Windsor, Berkshire, by his wife the former Lady May
Cambridge, daughter of the 1st Earl of Athlone, by his wife HRH
Princess Alice of Albany, daughter of Prince Leopold, 1st Duke of
Albany, fourth son of HM Queen Victoria, by whom he had issue; married
(2) 18 Oct 1996, Christine, widow of Sir Eric Vincent de la Rue, 3rd
Baronet; and daughter of Kurt Schellin, MD, of Greenwich, Connecticut,
USA; by whom he also had issue (born prior to the marriage). His
eldest son is Ian Liddell-Grainger, Conservative MP for Bridgwater,
and the first descendant of Queen Victoria to sit in the Commons (??).
Career:-.>>Scots Guards 1948-50; property developer and farmer;
councillor 1958-73, has served on the Scottish Gas Council and the
conls of the RNLI, Scottish Scout Assoc, National Trust for Scotland,
Royal Agric Soc of England, Scottish Landowners Federation, deputy
chairman Timber Growers UK 1985-88; memer of the regional advisory
committee Forestry Commission area commissioner for Scouts in Borders;
underwriting member of Lloyd's; hospitaller Order of St John
(Scotland) 1977-82; KStJ; Grand Master Mason in Scotland 1969-74;
member, Queen's Bodyguard for Scotland (Royal Company of Archers)
1955-83; FSA; &c.
