Thomas Russell Brain (1965—), is the new Baron, though it will be interesting to see if he has married and has any children. Last in his line.

He was son of Russell Brain, 1st Baron Brain (1895-1966) and Stella Langdon-Down (6 April 1896-12 September 1992).

Michael Cottrell Brain
August 6, 1928 - November 6, 2025
Dr. Michael Brain passed away on Thursday, November 6, 2025

August 6, 1928 - London, England

November 6, 2025 - Calgary, Alberta

It is with sadness, yet in celebration of a long life well lived, that we recognize the passing of Dr. Michael Brain, at the age of 97 years, in Calgary, Alberta. As Lord Brain he was the 3rd Baron Brain of Eynsham, having inherited this title from his father, Russell Brain, the 1st Baron Brain of Eynsham, after his older brother Christopher passed away in 2018. Few people were aware of his title, he never referred to himself as Lord Brain, as although he was tremendously proud of his esteemed father, he believed in meritocracy. Michael shared his life with his loving wife of nearly 65 years, Elizabeth Brain (nee Herbert).

Michael loved his family. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth, his sister, Janet, his children Hilary (married to Peter), Philippa (Pippa) (married to Armando), Thomas (Tom) (married to Joan), grandchildren Erica, Monica, Josh, Jacinta, Nathan, step grandchildren Nicole, Megan, Brad, Bill and great grandchildren Celine, Reid, and Winslow. [...]

The obit is extensive and I haven't had time to take it in, so there may be useful extracts further down, or given it proper consideration, however, I think the listing of 5 grandchildren is more than is in Debrett's online.  Further work needed.

Fingers cross, possibility of an heir and maybe a spare.

This obituary for Manuel TEVES (father of Armando TEVES, husband of Hon Philippa BRAIN) from 2022 mentions "Josh Teves, Jacinta Teves, Nathan Teves" amongst his grandchildren: https://thewhig.remembering.ca/obituary/manuel-teves-1084620540

Further research might be needed to confirm this, but it seems from the above obituary that the Josh, Jacinta and Nathan mentioned in Lord BRAIN's obituary are all children of his younger daughter, Hon Philippa BRAIN. None of the three are mentioned in DPB 2019; I don't know whether they are included in the online version. Erica and Monica are mentioned in DPB 2019 as daughters of Lord BRAIN's elder daughter, Hon Hilary BRAIN.

With colinp's post, we know that the only 2 male grandchildren mentioned, Josh and Nathan, are not the children of the new Baron

It would seem , then, that there is no heir to the title.

Surely the most appropriate family name for a peerage created for a neurologist.
Also worth noting that Lord Brain was a great-grandson of John Langdon Down  best known for his description and classification of Downs Syndrome subsequently named after him

Of all the extant hereditary peerages I think that this is the worst sounding. Surgeon or otherwise.

At the time of his death, the late Baron was the 4th oldest hereditary peer.

Only the Earl of Elgin and Kincardine (101),  Baron Walsingham (100) and Baron Gisborough (98) were older.

Brooke - it was actually Tim's post that showed the only two male grandchildren were not in remainder
