Mr Ian Anthony BALDING LVO died 2 January 2026, aged 87. 

He was born 7 November 1938, son of Captain Gerald Matthews BALDING 1903-57. He was a racehorse trainer from 1964-2002 (including to HM Queen Elizabeth II from 1964-1999). He was awarded an LVO in 1992.

He m 15 August 1969 Lady Emma Alice Mary HASTINGS-BASS b 1949 (advanced to rank of an Earl's daughter 1993), dau of Peter Robin Hood HASTINGS-BASS 1920-64 (also father of 17th EARL OF HUNTINGDON b 1948, and gs of 14th EARL OF HUNTINGDON 1841-85) by his 1947 m to Priscilla Victoria 1920-2010 dau of Sir Harold Malcom BULLOCK 1st and last Bt (UK 1954) MBE 1889-1966 by his 1919 m to Lady Victoria Alice Louise 1892-1927 dau of 17th EARL OF DERBY 1865-1948 by his 1889 m to Lady Alice Maude Olivia 1862-1957 dau of 7th DUKE OF MANCHESTER 1823-90, etc). They had 1 son and 1 daughter (the racehorse trainer Andrew BALDING and the broadcaster Clare BALDING).

Did Lady Emma's father inherit money or estates from his aunt Lady Wilmot Bass? Or why did he add the "Bass" name?


Below is what I have on the Bass family, which is a bit more fleshed out than what is given in recent Burke's editions, sub Burton.

Speaking of Clare Balding, "Celebrity Traitors" is now streaming in the USA on Peacock. Unfortunately, with the people I follow and the podcasts and shows I watch, there was no way I could avoid knowing exactly who won as soon as it aired in the UK, but it's still amazing to watch.

From the Times of 7 March 2026: BALDING A memorial service for Ian will be held at Park House Stables, Kingsclere, on 19th April 2026.
