Revel Guest obituary
Pioneering director of Panorama, film producer, horse breeder and well-connected chairwoman of the Hay Festival of literature and arts
...By her own admission, Guest, the daughter of a Conservative politician and the second cousin of Sir Winston Churchill, hated cocktail parties.  ...she was, however, a greater giver of dinner parties at her family’s estate in the Golden Valley, Herefordshire. Convivial evenings as guests of Guest became something of a rite of passage for authors attending the Hay Festival near by, though they knew they had to “sing for their supper”....
...Revel Sarah Guest was born in London in 1931. Her father, the Hon Oscar Guest, was a former Liberal but now Conservative MP. His three brothers were also MPs and his cousin was Churchill. Her mother was Lady Kathleen (née Paterson). Revel, who was named after a forebear who was defrocked as a priest, described boarding at Bedgbury School as “horrid”, counting the days when she could return to the family home Cabalva House (which means “horse place” in Welsh) and ride bareback in the Golden Valley...
...In 1968, with her American husband Robert Albert, she created Transatlantic Films, a pioneering independent documentary film company that for 40 years...
...Revel had met Albert, a lawyer, at the Dakota hotel in New York in 1962 while she was making her film about Baldwin for Panorama. They married in 1963 and she called him “my secret weapon, he always manages to leave everyone feeling happy at the end of a negotiation”. They eventually settled at Cabalva House, where they farmed sheep and cattle and cultivated cereal crops... Her husband survives her along with their children: Justin, National Trust director for Wales, and Corisande, a writer, potter and farmer. Her children have taken on ownership of Transatlantic Films...
Revel Guest OBE, film producer and chairwoman of Hay Festival, was born on September 14, 1931. She died in her sleep on June 8, 2022, aged 90
