From the Telegraph of 22 October 2019: BOYD Sir John, KCMG. Died on 18th October, surrounded by family after illness heroically endured. Former Ambassador to Japan, Chairman of the Trustees of the British Museum, Master of Churchill College, Cambridge, Trustee of the Wordsworth Trust, linguist, string player, and lover of books, travel, wine, music, paintings, television and marzipan. He is sorely missed by his wife Julia, children Jonathan, Emily, Jessica, Alice and Olivia, and many grandchildren. Memorial service to be announced in due course.
He was s of Prof James Dixon BOYD (1907-68) and Amélie Clara LOEWENTHAL (1906-98). He m 1st 1968 Gunilla Kristina Ingegard RöNNGREN and had a son and a dau. He m 2nd 1977 Julia Daphne (b 1948) d of Capt Antony Edward Montague RAYNSFORD RN DL (1914-93), sometime head of the gentry family of that name of Milton Malsor, and Hon Joan Rosemary WAKEFIELD OBE (b 1920, d of 1st & last Baron WAKEFIELD OF KENDAL (1898-1983)), and had three daus.
