I think the new baronet is actually married, to the former Mary-Kate Quinlan, and they have two sons born in 2010 and 2014.

Thanks for the update. I'm working from an old edition of 'the good book' and didn't have that info to hand!

Whilst it does not appear to have been reported in this group or elsewhere, I have found a probate entry for George John Carlos WOLSELEY. He died 25 April 2010 at the age of 85.

I have also spent some hours poring over the Wolesley Baronets, particularly the 1745 creation, this afternoon. Surely some record for there to be SEVEN baronets in succession to fail to have a son of their own. What's more surprising is that there are still heirs out there.

I understand that the late Sir Charles was sadly the last occupant of an estate that was granted his family by King Edgar back in the late 10th Century. Does anyone have any idea how many families still occupy such pre-Norman estates. I understand this is a little off-piste as this would include non-titled gentry families too (which I guess is not necessarily within the group's remit); but I'm sure it might rouse some interest. I know the Scudamore family in Herefordshire can trace to Edward the Confessor - but King Edgar is solidly pre-Norman and must be a rarity, surely ? - By the way - you regular contributors are doing a worthy job here for those of us that are interested in these matters and deserve some applause !

Hello Robert, to my understanding the answer is 'very few'; I believe the general apprehension during the late twentieth century (perhaps since disproved/ one or more of the families has died out) was that there were only three families with proven descent dating to before the Norman Conquest: Arden (of Arden, Warwicks.), Berkeley, and Swinton, with the last being the only one still in possession of its estate, Swinton, Berwickshire.

Even other notably extremely ancient families such as, for example, Fulford (owned Great Fulford at Dunsford near Exeter since Richard I), have apparently 'only' owned their estates since post-William the Conqueror. Other similar families of this type: Dymoke of Scrivelsby, Lincs. (Hereditary King's/ Queen's Champions) and Giffard of Chillington, Staffs. ... perhaps a few more? That's pretty much as far as I go; hopefully someone with specific knowledge can chime in!

EDIT: Apparently, based on this article- http://landedfamilies.blogspot.co.uk/2015/06/170-arden-of-park-hall-and-longcroft.html- the Ardens at least are now extinct. I'm not sure about the Berkeleys- apparently they still own Berkeley Castle, but that's apparently 12th century.

Hello G.Willis
Thanks for your response; Giffard is a new one to me -  I was hoping there were more - perhaps there may be - it is just perhaps that they never reached even the lower foothills of gentrification and thus do not come to our attention. Many years ago I met a cornish farmer who claimed that his family owned land in unbroken descent from before the conquest. but there you go - unprovable probably; I also seem to remember reading that the Englefield family were similarly ancient but only the estate exists today. I don't know why this matters but somehow it does. Still, at least our Royal Family are still thriving !
Thanks for the link and I look forward to other contributions. Glad to know this is of interest to others too.
