He was the son of John Mayo BORTHWICK (1910-1943) and (m 1936) Lois Margaret Fitzroy (1915-2009) d of Clarence Charles BAYLY (1885-1940), descended from the 2nd surviving son of Sir Nicholas Bayly, 2nd Baronet (1709-1782) (whose elder brother Henry later succeeded as Baron Paget of Beaudesert (cr by writ 1549) and later created 1784 Earl of Uxbridge and father of the 1st Marquess of Anglesey).
