Wonder if this will really be the first aristocratic gay wedding as the Daily Mail says. I remember at least a few civil partnerships in the past, probably not directly children or grandchildren of a Duke, Earl, Viscount, Marquess or Baron ... but still. Although I see that you actually can get married in England, Wales and Scotland since 2014.

In this case, will Lady Anne's future wife become Lady ?

How would they be announced ??

Lady Anna and Sarah Gordon ?

No is the answer,  titles of honour can not be refashioned to accommodate such unions.

So if Sarah takes on her partners surname, then she will be Mrs Sarah Gordon. Most likely Mrs Sarah McChesney Gordon or Gordon McChesney.

Thanks for that.

Lady Anna's title comes from the fact that she is the daughter of a Marquess and not, per se, her's. Indeed, as titles are transferred (in the majority of cases - leaving aside the Queen and peeress in their own right) through the male Lady Anna has nothing to transfer. Same sex marriages are the anomaly to titles etc and in an age when titles mean less and less there is no great urgency to change the status quo.

Miss McChesney could of course keep her own name.

Or Lady Anna could become Lady Anna McChesney or Lady Anna Gordon-McChesney or Lady Anna McChesney-Gordon.

Both Sir George Agnew Bt (cr 1895 UK) and Sir John Graham Bt (cr 1964 UK) were in civil partnerships according to the latest Debretts - they may have upgraded them to marriages

Which is of course well possible, so that is why I wondered. So much fuzz about this being the "first" aristocratic same-sex marriage, when it actually might not be.

Last September, Peerage News reported the marriage, in Newport, Rhode Island, USA, of Hon. Esmond Vyvyan Harmsworth, b. 1967, son of 2nd Viscount Rothermere and his American 3rd wife Mary Elizabeth (Murchison) Ohrstrom, to a Jerome Buet. The listing said they married Sept. 16, 2016 at Mr. Harmsworth's home.
