The arrest and trial of a "society beauty" Clare Irby has made the
news recently. I looked her up today. She is the stepdaughter of
Paul Irby (not Aschan), nephew of the 9th Baron Boston and cousin of
the 10th Baron (and not the grandson of a baron either). Her thrice-
married mother is Emma Henderson who married firstly a Seymour (of the
marquesses of Hertford) and thirdly Paul Irby, with Clare's father in
the middle. She has issue four children, two each by her second and
third marriages. Clare's father David (not Paul) Aschan is also
thrice married, also with issue four children, two each by his second
wife and third wife Emma. [I don't know if he remarried after his
third divorce in 1981].

I don't know when Clare changed her name from Aschan to Irby, but her
son James Byron Aschan Irby was born 15 December 2006 to Clare and one
Graham (surname ___). Clare was then 27.

She is a third cousin of society notables Rose van Cutsem (nee Astor),
Kate Goldsmith (nee Rothschild) and Alice Rothschild. Her paternal
grandmother was a Guinness.

Her mother Emma has some noble ancestors in the Lowthers, the Barons
Annaly (descent from the 3rd Baron) etc.

The connection to the Earls of Iveagh etc goes back via Clare's
ancestors Mary Alice Guinness (descended from William Lunell Guinness,
5th son of Arthur Guinness and Olivia Whitmore; their 2nd son Arthur
being father of the 1st Bt and grandfather of the 1st Lord Ardilaun
and the 1st Earl of Iveagh) and Howard Rundell Guinness (grandson of
Robert Rundell Guinness,

Richard Guinness -> Arthur Guinness (1725-1803) founder of the better
known branches -> [5th son] William Lunell Guinness (1779-1842) who
helped manage the family brewery before 1839 -> Rev William Newton
Guinness (1811-1894) -> Mary Alice Guinness (d 1949) md 1887 Howard
Rundell Guinness

Richard Guinness -> Samuel Guiness (c 1727-1795) -> Richard Guinness
(1755-1829) -> Robert Rundell Guinness (1789-1857) / Richard Samuel
Guinness (1797-1857) -> [2nd son] Henry Guinness (1829-1893) -> [4th
son] Howard Rundell Guinness (1868-1937) -> Henry Samuel Howard
Guinness (1898-1975) -> [2nd dau] Marit Victoria Guinness (b. 1919) ->
(John Laurence) David Aschan (b. 1943) -> Clare Louise Aschan (b.
1979)

A great uncle Edward Douglas Guinness (or Ned Guinness 1893-1983) was
father of Sir Howard Christian Sheldon Guinness (b 1932) and Sir John
Ralph Sidney Guinness (b 1935).
Another great uncle Sir Arthur Rundell Guinness (1895-1951) was father
of two sons and one daughter
1. James Edward Alexander Rundell Guinness b. 23 Sep 1924, d. 26 Mar
2006 -> father of one son and four daughters by his wife Pauline
Vivien Mander -> his eldest dau is Sabrina Guinness, ex-flame of
Prince Charles, and his third daughter is Anita Patience Guinness (b
1957) widow of Hon Amschel Rothschild and now Mrs James Adair Wigan ->
Anita and Amschel had issue including an elder dau Kate Emma
Rothschild (b 1982) now wife of Ben Goldsmith with issue, and a yr dau
Alice Miranda Rothschild (b 1983) who has been involved with her
married brother in law Zac Goldsmith since 2005 (he recently announced
his separation from his wife of ten years, Sheherazade, mother of
their three children)
2. Pamela Patience Guinness+2 b. 25 Sep 1925 -> Clare Pamela St John
md David Waldorf Astor -> issue incl Rose Astor (b 1979) md 2005 Hugh
van Cutsem, and has issue 1 son (b 2009) and 1 dau
3. Ivan Douglas Rundell Guinness+2 b. 27 Jun 1927, d. 14 Aug 1956 ->
one son

So the Guinness connection and nearest Guinness relatives appears to
be as follows:
Howard Rundell Guinness (1868-1937) -> Henry Samuel Howard Guinness
(1898-1975) -> Marit Victoria Guinness (b 1919) -> (John Laurence)
David Aschan (b 1943) -> [2nd dau] Clare Louise Aschan, now Irby (b
1979)

Howard Rundell Guinness (1868-1937) -> Sir Arthur Rundell Guinness
(1895-1951) -> James Edward Alexander Guinness (1924-2006)/ Pamela
Patience Guinness (b 1925) -> Anita Patience Guinness (b 1957)// Clare
Pamela St John -> Kate Rothschild (b 1982)/ Alice Rothschild (b
1983)/// Rose Astor (b 1979) md 2005 Hugh van Cutsem

The Goldsmith-Rothschild and van Cutsem-Astor marriages and births of
subsequent issue were announced on this group, as was the death of
James Guinness in 2006

Robert Rundell Guinness (1789-1857) / Richard Samuel Guinness

Edward Arnsby Wilson, on 25 June 1970. He and Penelope Jane Wilson
were divorced in 1978, after one son and one daughter. He married,
thirdly, Emma Mary Henderson, daughter of Robert Alistair Henderson

Emma Mary Henderson was born on 5 November 1950. She is the daughter
of Robert Alistair Henderson and Bridget Elizabeth Lowther, daughter
of Colonel John George Lowther and Hon. Lilah Charlotte Sarah White,
daughter of Luke White, 3rd Baron Annaly of Annaly and Rathcline and

(John Laurence) David Aschan, son of Carl Nils Wilhelm Gunnar Aschan
and Marit Victoria Guinness, in 1979. They were divorced in 1981,
having had two daughters (the elder Clare b 1979 apparently uses her
stepfather's name). She married, thirdly, Paul Anthony Irby, eldest
son of Major Hon. Anthony Paul Irby [yr brother of the 9th Baron
Boston] and Countess Marie Apponyi, on 29 January 1982. They have two
sons

Paul Irby is the eldest son of Major Hon. Anthony Paul Irby [yr
brother of the 9th Baron Boston] (1908-1986) by his first wife
Countess Marie Apponyi (d 1952), daughter of Count Anton Apponyi and

The two year old child mentioned appears to be James Byron Aschan Irby
(b 15 December 2006), son of Clare and Graham. I don't know the
father's name.

Her paternal grandmother is Marit Victoria Guinness who was born on 28
January 1919., the second daughter and co-heiress of Henry Samuel
Howard Guinness [himself the son of Howard Rundell Guinness (himself
eldest son of Henry Guinness and Emmelina Brown) and Mary Alice
Guinness] and his wife Alfhild Holter. She married Carl Nils Wilhelm

Here her grandfather is called Richard, not Robert, Henderson. Has
her father changed his name to Paul instead of David? Clare is an
estate agent. Interestingly, Clare is unmarried, upper-middle-class
(at least), and there were too many witnesses. The Daily Mail's
coverage of her story is rather more sympathetic (thanks to her
background?) than it is to this kind of thing, usually.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1168127/The-party-Jacobi.html
[7 April 2009]

Nine years ago, she gave a moving reading at the memorial service for
her grandfather, former Kleinwort Benson boss Richard Henderson.
Yesterday, Heathfield-educated Clare Irby, 29, was staying out of the
limelight after being allegedly caught performing a sex act on a
flight from India with the boyfriend of a model asleep in the next
seat.
The estate agent daughter of Old Etonian banker Paul Aschan, a member
of the Guinness family, was holed up in her family's £600,000 Fulham
home.
'Clare is a wreck, she's devastated,' a family member says. 'There was
no sex. The whole thing is untrue. She is not that sort of person.'
Clare, whose parents divorced when she was two, was arrested along
with model Sarah Hannon and her boyfriend, Daniel Melia, at Heathrow.

Clare's paternal ancestry:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1168201/Im-innocent-claims-Guinness-heiress-quizzed-drunken-jet-romp-models-boyfriend.html

"Her grandmother Marit Guinness Aschan was a noted artist, while her
grandfather Carl Aschan, who died last year aged 102, was a vital
wartime intelligence officer.
He served Britain in his native Sweden during the Second World War,
and in 1945 helped to hunt down some of Hitler's close associates.

And is her mother now divorced? The same article says:

"Miss Irby's mother Emma lives with Miss Irby's younger sister and two
brothers in a semi-detached town house only 200 yards from Clare's
flat."

The article describes Clare Irby as a former stockbroker, now estate
agent, who has her own luxury flat in Fulham West.

Update on the trial

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1213907/Guinness-heiress-accused-mile-high-romp-glasses-wine-flight-home.html

Cleared on a technicality, because she was not drunk when she landed
in Britain, as opposed to during the flight - because the captain had
banned her from drinking further.

"But it took a jury only 45 minutes to clear the 30-year-old of being
drunk on an aircraft because of a legal technicality.
Despite evidence that she was drunk around four hours into the 11-hour
flight, the jury could convict her only if they found she had lost
control of her faculties over British airspace - the last 20 minutes
of the flight as the plane crossed the Channel.
But the jury heard that by the time Miss Irby landed, she had not had
a drink for at least six hours because the captain of the plane had
banned her from drinking.
A not guilty verdict was subsequently returned."

The headline reads: "Guinness heiress accused of mile-high romp is
CLEARED of being drunk on jet"

I don't know if there were other charges, and if Miss Irby is liable
for prosecution in India (because she was flying Kingfisher Airlines,
which is Indian-owned AFAIK).

The aristocracy hasn't been having a good press lately, with the
brother of the current Lord Davies being accused of stealing money
from the family trust to fund his own personal and familial expenses.

Also, the Daily Mail has finally corrected her father's name to David
Aschan after a string of stories. Wonder why he was called Paul Aschan
for all this while (since April 2009) and David Aschan only now???

Miss Irby, of Fulham, West London, is the daughter of Old Etonian
banker David Aschan and is a scion of the Guinness brewing dynasty

But her paternal grandmother was Marit, not Marits, nee Guinness.
