Tonight's Evening Standard (12 January 2012) publishes news of the
death of the Hon Shaun Plunket:

DEATH OF THE QUEEN'S COUSIN, SHAUN PLUNKET
Sad to learn that Shaun Plunket, cousin of the Queen and godson of
George VI, has died aged 80. He was perhaps best known as the fourth
husband of Andrea Reynolds, girlfriend of Claus von Bulow, who
appeared in court in New York during the latter's trial for the murder
of his wife. Plunket, a passionate tennis player, who lost a lot of
money in the Eighties, ran a 40-acre B&B with Reynolds, The Guest
House, in the Catskill Mountains near New York. Reynolds was a
Hungarian-born socialite and freelance journalist who became an
enthusiastic supporter of von Bulow after the death of his wife. She
later wrote a book about the case. The younger son of Lord Plunket,
Shaun was educated at Eton and L'Institut de Touraine and served with
the Irish Guards in Kenya. As a child he was photographed with
Princess Elizabeth walking with the penguins at London Zoo. He married
three times.
________________________________________________

He was a younger son of the 6th Baron PLUNKET (1899-1938) and Dorothée
Mabel, (formerly Mrs Jack Barnato and d of Joseph LEWIS of Mayfair (d
1938) they were both killed in an air crash in California. He m 1st
1961 (div 1979) Judith Ann, d of Gerard Patrick POWER of Lapworth,
Warwicks (by whom he had a son and a dau). He m 2nd 1980 Elisabeth (d
1986, formerly Mrs Thomas de Sancha, d of Helge DRANGEL of Stockholm
He m 3rd 1989 Andrea (formerly Mrs Sheldon Reynolds, d of Andre MILOS
of Budapest). Doubtless his exact date of death will be in the
official announcement when it appears.

His son is now heir presumptive to the barony:

TYRONE SHAUN TERENCE (b 1966, sometime Page of Honour to HM The
Queen). He m 2000 Lucy Marguerite, James B CURRIE MC of The Old
Rectory, Mickfield, Stowmarket, Suffolk, and has twin sons Rory and
Patrick (both b 2001). There are four others in line to the title by
my reckoning.

I'm sure the late Plunket and HMQ are distantly cousins of some sort
but I'm not sure that justifies the headline. Or are they 3rd or 4th
cousins of some sort (a more distant is pushing it for a headline).

He was a "cousin of a cousin-in-law" of Her Majesty via his kinship with Denys Rhodes, late husband of the Queen's cousin the Hon Margaret Elphinstone.

His mother was i believe the illegitimate daughter of the 7th marquess
of Londonderry. So another peerage connection.

Thanks for that. So the usual journalistic sloppiness we've come to
expect in such matters

Elizabeth II Windsor, Queen of Great Britain is a 6th cousin of a
grandparent of Shaun Plunket.
Indeed, Henry Bentinck, Duke of Portland and his wife Elizabeth Noel
are at the same time
ancestors of the 9th generation of Shaun Plunket
ancestors of the 7th generation of Elizabeth II Windsor, Queen of
Great Britain

That's excellent thanks Olivier. I don't imagine many Evening Standard
readers know that (or, indeed the journalist who wrote the piece)!
