The former Lord Justice of the Court of Appeal of Northern Ireland died on 13 December 2022.  He was appointed a High Court Judge of Northern Ireland in 1973 and knighted and sworn of the Privy Council on his elevation to the Appeal bench in 1987

He was the son of the Rt Hon John Clarke MacDermott (1896-1979) who was created a Law Lord as Baron Macdermott in 1947 and later became Lord Chief Justice of Northern Ireland.

(The practice now is that Northern Ireland High Court Judges are treated in the same way as English High Court Judges and knighted on or soon after their appointment)

From the Telegraph of 20 Dec 2022: MACDERMOTT The Rt Hon Sir John Clarke died peacefully at home on 13th December 2022 aged 95. Beloved husband of Margaret, father of Helen, Anne, Janet and Gillian, grandfather and great grandfather. A Service of Thanksgiving will be held on 29th December, at 12 noon at St John’s Church, Helen's Bay, Co Down.
