Hello all,

Just a (perhaps slightly unorthodox?) posting I thought to make after encountering a slightly perplexing matter online, with which your A1 knowledge might be helpful!

I've noticed a few references (Wikipedia and http://www.espncricinfo.com/england/content/player/9130.html) to an uncle/ nephew relationship between the cricketer Frederick Gough-Calthorpe and the commentator 'Blowers', which seems to have been entirely extrapolated by whomsoever did so due to the fact that Blofeld's middle name is 'Calthorpe'. From what I've looked into, the Calthorpe name started to appear in the Blofeld pedigree (as seen under Blofeld of Hoveton in BLG) following the marriage sometime in the 1600s of Thomas Blofeld and Catherine, the daughter of John Calthorpe of Hickling Hall (who very well might be a connection to the Gough-Calthorpes; I haven't had the opportunity to look that far into this, and even if so it wouldn't mean FGC was Blofeld's 'uncle', or at least it'd be a very distant kind).

Obviously, for FGC to be Blofeld's uncle, he would have to be a brother to either Blofeld's father (Thomas Robert Calthorpe Blofeld) or mother, Grizel Blanche Turner. Given that the baronial Gough-Calthorpe pedigree is pretty well-established and available anywhere, this doesn't appear to be the case. I just wondered if, based on any information any helpful individual might have to hand, it could be considered that the relationship as outlined above is correctly stated. If not, I have no idea how to go about 'correcting' Cricinfo, without which correction Wikipedia- adhering to its policy of 'if it's stated in pretty much anything, it's OK by us' [don't get me wrong, I love Wikipedia for what it is, but this kind of scenario I find rather irritating]- will continue to include 'Blofeld's uncle was cricketer Freddie Calthorpe' as a misleading piece of incorrect information (unless, of course, anyone can show me where I've missed an obvious piece of information that clears the whole dealy up!).

Many thanks to anyone who might help me come to a conclusion on this matter one way or the other!

Just for anyone who might come across this at some point: http://www.cricketcountry.com/articles/henry-blofeld-nephew-of-an-england-captain-217019
I'd like to think the timing of the article is suggestive- coming only a short time after the initial posting in this thread- but that might reasonably be considered rather egotistical!
At any rate, as one would, I feel, reasonably conclude based on the information in my post above, Henry Blofeld is not Freddie Calthorpe's nephew- far from it, according to author Michael Jones, who concludes- with much evidence to hand- that the two are twelfth cousins three times removed.

A satisfyingly in-depth treatment of genealogy, I'd say, particularly given the article's not in a dedicated place for it!
