My Lords, I regret to inform the House of the death of the noble and learned Lord, Lord Etherton, yesterday. On behalf of the House, I extend our condolences to the noble and learned Lord’s family and friends.

He was the Master of the Rolls from 2016 to 2021 and was created a Life Peer on retirement in 2021, sitting on the crossbenches.

He was made a Knight Bachelor in 2001 on appointment as a High Court Judge, and a Privy Counsellor on appointment to the Court of Appeal in 2008.  He was Chancellor of the High Court (head of the Chancery division) from 2013 to 2016.  He was awarded the GBE in 2024.

He cp 2006 Andrew STONE, and then m 2014 Andrew STONE when it became possible to convert a civil partnership to a marriage. No issue.

He was s of Alan Kenneth ETHERTON 1927-2014 by his 1949 m reg Q3 Essex to Elaine Myrtle 1928-87 d of Gabriel MACCOBY 1901-63 of 130 Empress Ave, Cranbrook Rd, Ilford, Essex by his c1926 m reg Q1 Stepney to Sophie LEVY 1901-75

From the Times of 9 May 2025: ETHERTON Terence Michael Elkan Barnet, The Rt Hon the Lord Etherton GBE, KC. Terry died on the 6th May. Beloved husband to Andrew Stone and much-loved brother to Derek, Richard, Gillian and Mark. Terry will be deeply missed by so many. Funeral service (limited places) to take place on Sunday 11th May at 9.45am at Hoop Lane Jewish Cemetery, Golders Green, London... Evening prayers will be held at 7.30pm at West London Synagogue, 34 Upper Berkeley Street, London... There will be a memorial service to honour Terry’s life and achievements later in the year.
