Nigel George PAULET, 18th Marquess of Winchester and Premier Marquess of England (E 1551) died in South Africa on 8 April 2016

Probate notice in the South Africa Government Gazette 15 November 2019 42841 p 59 (Notice to creditors in deceased estates):

005845/2019 [ Notice ref]—(2) Paulet, Nigel George, 22 December 1941, 4112225108082, 6A Main Road, Irene, Gauteng 0062; [Name, DOB. identity number, last address]
(3) 8 April 2016; [date of death] (5) Christopher John Hilton Paulet, c/o PO Box 733, Cape Gate 7562 [executor]

Given item 4 (surviving spouse details) in the notice is blank I would assume that the 18th Marquess was divorced or widowed at the time of his death.  He m 1967 Rosemary Anne HILTON

The 19th Marquess (subject to proving his claim and being entered on the Roll of the Peerage) is the late Marquess's elder son (subject to proving his claim and being entered on the Roll of the Peerage) Christopher John Hilton PAULET (Earl of Wiltshire or perhaps he did not use the courtesy title) b 30 July 1969 (of the same address as his father - Gauteng, SA acc to DPB 2019).  He m 1992 Christine TOWN and had issue:-

Michael John (Lord St John) b 31 Aug 1999 (heir apparent)
Lady Emma Louise b 1993

As can be seen from my further post today the Marchioness of Winchester died on 25 February 2019 and her probate notice is in the same edition of the Gazette.  I imagine probate for the Marquess's death was obtained in order to facilitate the administration of her estate but wasn't needed when he died.  Therefore at the time probate was applied for in respect of the Marquess's estate there was no surviving spouse details to be mentioned in the notice

ColinP,
The applications filed list different addresses for the 18th Marquess and his wife.He was living in 6A Main Rd,Irene(which is near Pretoria) and she was living next door at 6B Main Rd,Irene, which suggests they were at least separated.
It’s curious that the death of England’s premier marquess has gone unnoticed for nearly 7 years.

The fact that Wikipedia was only updated following this post suggests that this family regard themselves as an "ordinary" South African family and do not give much credence to their position in the peerage of England

Is there any evidence that they even use the titles?

Debrett's Online has not updated the Winchester page, but then again, they have not updated the Courtown and Hazlerigg pages either (to reflect sons born to the heirs apparent).

Often times, this group, it seems, has more knowledge than Debrett's does, so much thanks to those in Peerage News who keep us all updated.

Are there any male descendants of the first Marquess other than those in South Africa in line of succession to this peerage?.If not as with other titles held by residents of other countries it is quite possible all contact will eventually lost. It took four years in the case of Lord Kensington also in South Africa to update on line sources and there may well be others

Bremen,
The 18th Marquess originally lived in Rhodesia in the suburb of Borrowdale in Salisbury, as Harare was then known. He moved to South Africa in the seventies.Needless to say his speech in the House of Lords was about Rhodesia.

An update to my post above.Burke's Peerage 1970 recorded his address as 35 Whyteladies Lane,Borrowdale,Salisbury as did Debretts in 1979.Burkes in listed his address as 6A Main St Irene. In Burkes 1970 he is listed as a director of several mining companies.
I speculate that there may have been no probate in relation to his death because his real property passed by survivorship to his wife, and was only required when she died so that both properties could be sold(I note his son the 19th Marquess lives in Capetown).

DPB has updated this entry - it also shows that the 19th Marquess's son Michael, styled Earl of Wiltshire is engaged to Kaitlin Deirn
