A correspondent informs me that the deceased Mr Chettle
was unmarried.

Confusing.
The Times death notice indicates his wife is still living. How certain
is your correspondent of this information?

Sorry, I see in my original note that they divorced in '83 so,
technically he was unmarried at the time of his death. Is that what
your correspondent meant?

I am told that Peter Chettle (no middle name Ivan) was never married,
had no children, no other christian names and was born in Mandalay on
28th July 1921.

Thanks Michael
But I'm not convinced, without more evidence than hearsay, that I've
mis-identified this Peter Chettle. I accept I may have but need more
proof.
You're right that Jennifer wasn't his wife, at the time he died. But
quite often divorced couples remain on good terms, especially when
there are children involved, and even grow quite close, possibly even
live together, towards the end of their lives. It is reasonable to put
this interpretation on the death notice wording.

I've had an email from someone close to the late Mr Chettle which
indicates I have mis-identified this person, as Michael has indicated.
I suggest we remove this post if possible, or ignore it for the
purposes of our records.
