Her aunt and namesake (1913-1997) was married to Prince Louis of Hesse and by Rhine (1908-1968).

The Prince, who was a great-grandson of Queen Victoria (his grandmother being Princess Alice), lost his older brother, Georg Donatus, Hereditary Grand Duke of Hesse and by Rhine, and most of the Hereditary Grand Duke's family (wife, Princess Cecilie of Greece and Denmark, and 2 of their 3 children) in a 1937 airplane crash.

Princess Cecilie was a sister of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

Following his brother's death, Prince Louis succeeded as head of the formerly grand ducal House of Hesse and by Rhine.  He also served as a godfather to Prince Edward, now Duke of Edinburgh.
