Max Mosley, son of Sir Oswald Mosley who dominated Formula One and waged war on the tabloid press – obituary As head of F1's governing body he oversaw years of success but his position became shaky after he was filmed with prostitutes by a tabloid …If Mosley had been known only for his Formula One career his sexual antics might have been viewed as foolish and (depending on taste) depraved. But Mosley’s name carried a disturbing resonance. His father was Sir Oswald Mosley, the British fascist leader. Indeed Max was Sir Oswald’s favourite son.
…Max Rufus Mosley was born on April 13 1940 when his father had been interned by a government concerned at his calls for an accommodation to be sought with Hitler. Max was the second son of his father’s second wife, the society beauty Diana Mitford, who was herself interned 11 weeks after his birth.
Diana Mosley had the choice to take her baby with her into Holloway prison, but declined. Max and his brother Alexander were cared for over the next two years by Diana’s sister Pam and an army of nannies.
When the war ended and the Mosleys were released, no British school would take their sons, so, as Diana Mosley later recalled, “we got a tutor, and later on Ali went to school in Paris and Max in Germany”. In 1950 the family moved to France.
…In 1960 he married Joan Taylor, a policeman’s daughter whom he had met at a movement rally. In 1961 he was fined £2 for obstructing a policeman in Trafalgar Square, where he had been taking part in a counter-demonstration against an anti-apartheid protest.
…In the early 1980s, after his father’s death, Mosley considered standing as a Conservative candidate but concluded that the family name would count against him. Later on he was said to have converted to New Labour.
…Mosley was made a Chevalier of the Légion d’honneur in 2006.
He is survived by his wife Jean and by a son. Another son died of a drug overdose in 2009.
