Lieutenant-General Sir Rollo Paine, KCB, MC, late the 4th/7th Royal
Dragoon Gurads (Colonel of the Regiment 1978-83) Head of the British
Defence Staff, Washington 1975-78, died 14 April, 2005. He was aged 83.

Horace Rollo Squarey Pain was born 11 May, 1921, the son of Horace Davy
Pain, of Levenside, Haverthwaite, Ulverston, Cumbria, by his wife, the
former Audrey Hampson.

Career: Commissioned into the Reconnaissance Corps during WWII, served
in NW Europe and was awarded the Military Cross; served for 2 years in
East Africa and British Somaliland before joining 4th/7th Royal Dragoon
Guards in Palestine in 1947; Staff College, Camberley, 1951;
subsequently served in Military Operations Directorate, in War Office;
served with his regiment in B.A.O.R., 1955-56; Member, Directing Staff,
Staff College, Camberley, 1957; GSO1, British Army Staff, Washington
DC, 1960; commanded his regiment in B.A.O.R., 1962; commanded one of
the three divisions, Staff College, Camberley, 1964; commanded the 5th
infantry Brigade in Borneo, 1965; Imperial Defence College, 1968; ADC
to Queen Elizabeth II, 1969; BGS, HQ, BAOR, 1969-70; General Officer
Commanding 2nd Division 1970-72; Director of Army Training, Ministry of
Defence, 1972-75; Colonel Commandant, Military Provost Staff Corps,
1974-83;&c.

He was awarded the MC 1945; CB 1974; KCB 1975.

Sir Rollo, of Eddlethorpe Hall, Malton, North Yorkshire, married in
1950, Denys Sophia Chaine-Nickson, by whom he had one son, Michael, and
two daughters, Audrey and Jennifer.

The funeral Service is at All Saints Church, Burythorpe on Wednesday 27
April 2005.
