According to multiple reports, legendary actress Dame Patricia ROUTLEDGE  died today, October 3rd , 2025.  She was 96.

Born Katherine Patricia ROUTLEDGE on February 17, 1929, she appeared on radio and on the stage, and in television and film.  Her versatility was extraordinary, as she was at home in roles that involved singing, as well as comedy and drama.

Perhaps her best known role was as the snobby Hyacinth Bucket (as Hyacinth herself said, pronounced "Bouquet") in the long running and adored British comedy "Keeping Up Appearances."

Dame Patricia was nominated for and won multiple awards, on both sides of the Atlantic.  Among her major awards was an American Tony (for Darling of the Day in 1968) and a British Olivier (for Candide, 20 years later).

She was awarded an OBE in 1993, a CBE in 2004, and finally, a DBE in 2017.

She was unmarried and had no children.

Has this anything to do with  the group?

This group often discusses the possibility of some male celebrity or VIP  getting a knighthood.

A damehood is the female equivalent of a knighthood.  Dame Patricia was an actual recepient of a damehood.  That's the reasoning behind my post.

Of course, you are welcome to disagree.

The purpose of this group:

To discuss the peerage, baronetage and landed gentry of the United Kingdom; the genealogy of titled families; including news of births, marriages and deaths.

Although we may occasionally discuss the possibility of well known people (not just male) getting honours etc, the above stated purpose of the group is clear. It does not include reporting on the life events of people who have no association with the families of whom we treat. If we started down that route this group would be overwhelmed with posts about such people, which would be against its purpose.

It is of course very tempting to report on particularly well known and loved figures, but I believe the purpose of this group is a discipline worth maintaining.

Well then, Richard, I stand corrected.

I thought since we had previously had threads such as "David Beckham potential knighthood", that the passing of an actual Dame  wouldn't be such a controversial post.

My apologies for all who were offended.

I didn't agree with the Beckham post either. But I don't respond to all the posts not relevant to this group - that would take up too much time.

And I wasn't at all OFFENDED, just presented an opportunity to remind members of the Group's purpose. I think I've said in the past that, if posters are interested in recording news of title holders who do not come under this group, then they really should start a group for that. I'm being serious about that. It's a legitimate interest, just not for this group.
