We had a discusson of some of the family of the Earls of Newburgh at
the Nobiliana Forum, and I thought some members of this group would be
interested. This arose as a result of posting news of the death of
Charlotte Radclyffe Behrmann, née Cadman, who died at Vermillion,
South Dakota, on 28 December 2011. She was born at Arcadia, Florida,
on 24 December 1913, daughter of William Heaton Radclyffe Cadman and
Constance Burdett Dempster.

The Cadman descent from Lady Charlotte Radclyffe was gleaned from
several 19th Century newspaper articles, where it was also said that
Edwin Cadman (1809-1872) was reduced to relative poverty and was
actually arrested for Theft shortly before his death. His
grandparents, George and Margaret Goodwin, lived in an almshouse in
Sheffield before they died. The Cadmans are in the 1906 Burke's Landed
Gentry, where the Radclyffe descent of the Cadmans is stated.

The earliest newspaper report I can find detailing the Cadman claim is
in their hometown newspaper, the Sheffield Independent, 18 May 1861,
which reports as follows:

"The Hon. Charlotte Radclyffe, eldest daughter of Charlotte Maria,
Countess of Newburgh, and Charles Radclyffe, Earl of Derwentwater, was
born in France in 1729, was brought to Scotland in 1743, by Sir
Archibald Primrose, (a Jacobite confederate of her father in the cause
of the Prince Charles Edward,) and placed with Mrs. Murray, of Perth,
a relative of James Murray, of Braughton, the Prince's secretary, with
whom she resided till 1747, suffering in consequence of her father's
attainder and ignominious death. She was married in Scotland on the
2nd of April, 1747, and again in England on the 25th of April, same
year, to George Goodwin, a Protestant, but on account of which
marriage she was alienated from her family, and was anathematized. On
the 10th February, 1749, her only child (a son) was born. Ultimately,
differences arising as to his religious training, at Goodwin's death,
in 1757, the child was adopted by his uncle residing at Bradwell.
Charlotte returned to Lisle, where she resided till 1790, suffering
great mental and pecuniary distress. Whilst there she again became a
devoted Catholic, and using her maiden name, she died on the 11th
March, 1800. She had issue an only son, the Hon. George Goodwin, born
on the 10th February, 1749. He was only eight years of age when his
father died, and through the religious animosity, an attempt to
destroy documentary proof was made by the Catholic guardian, in order
to annul the marriage; but the intrigue was discovered by Burley, the
Protestant guardian. The former, being defeated in his purpose,
committed suicide. George married Margaret Senior, of Dodworth, on the
9th of May, 1776. He lived in obscurity, and died in comparative
penury at Sheffield, on the 6th December, 1835, (his cousin Francis
Eyre, to whom reference has been made before, having assumed the
title, &c, to his prejudice,) and had issue, Matthew, who died on the
27th June, 1853, without issue. And Mary, who is great granddaughter
of Charles Radclyffe, Earl of Derwentwater, and the Hon. Charlotte
Maria Livingstone, Countess of Newburgh, in her own right, was born on
the 25th December, 1785, aud married on the 9th of November, 1806,
Charles Cadman, great grandson of Benjamin Cadman, of Spinkhill Manor,
who with his relative, John Heaton, of Pickle House, suffered both in
estate and persecution from their loyalty and devoted attachment to
the Stuarts — the Prince having been secreted by Cadman on his flight
from Derby before the Duke of Cumberland, in 1745."

We also located several old copies of Lodge's, Stockdale's and
Debrett's Peerages, and found several Radclyffe and Eyre children not
mentioned in more modern peerages. That, in combination with more
research into the Cadmans, resulted in the following list of
descendants of Charles Radclyffe and the Countess of Newburgh.
Assuming that there really was a marriage between Lady Charlotte and
George Goodwin, all these people are in remainder to the Earldom of
Newburgh.

Very interesting. To carry this further, Charles Radclyffe or Radcliffe, Earl of Derwentwater, the Jacobite, was the younger son of Edward, the 2nd Earl, and his wife Lady Mary Tudor (1673-1726), the "natural daughter" of King Charles II and actress Moll Davies. There are numerous descendants of the 2nd Earl & Lady Mary among peerage and LG families (barons Petre, the Heneage family) and in the United States. Paul Theroff's online Descendants of James I lists many of them. Also, for a fictionalized account of the Derwentwaters, see Anya Seton's novel, "Devil Water," published about 50 years ago.

I remember reading that book when I was young, and ever since I've had a romantic vision of the Derwentwater history.
