the disease four years ago and now depends on 24-hour care by their
housekeeper, who has completed a course in dementia care, and a
private carer."

The duke has been married thrice, and his third wife Kay is taking
care of him. By his first wife Sarah Scott (d 1994), daughter of a
baronet, he has issue two sons and two daughters. Neither son is
married, I believe. Elder son Alexander, Marquess of Douglas and
Clydesdale is the heir apparent. There is no shortage of male Douglas-
Hamiltons - the heir has a younger brother, the next heir is Lord
Selkirk of Douglas cr a Life Peer 1997 (briefly 11th Earl of Selkirk
before disclaiming, and previously Lord James Douglas-Hamilton) who
has four sons - none married as yet, followed by a nephew Brendan (son
of a deceased brother Lord Hugh d. 1995) and two more brothers Lord
Patrick (divorced, one daughter only) and Lord David.

The 14th Duke had several brothers, of whom the next in line would be
the son of Lord Malcolm Douglas-Hamilton d. 1964 (third son of the
13th Duke) and the two sons of Lord David Douglas-Hamilton das. 1944
in a RAF crash [David is the grandfather of Saba Douglas-Hamilton, TV
wildlife presenter]

issue, but not confirmed.

I don't think there are any remaining heirs descended from the 4th
Duke of Hamilton and able to succeed to the Scottish and other
titles. In fact, the other lines from the father, William, 1st Earl
of Selkirk and Anne, 3rd Duchess of Hamilton are extinct.

No, but Angus Gavin, grandson of Lord Malcom Douglas-Hamilton and
Clodagh Pamela Bowes-Lyon, has a son born 1999. Angus's yr brother
married 2005, so there is still chance of issue.

John Gavin b 1957, from the second branch above, has a son out of
wedlock. If he marries the child's mother, his son is still eligible
to succeed, I assume. John Gavin is the last heir to the dukedom, I
think.

Brendan married twice, firstly 2004 (div) Josephine de Chair, and may
have issue, being only in his early thirties His six genealogically
senior cousins are all 30-ish or under.

As to the Baron Selkrick of Douglas, is he in line of succession to
the dukedom??? Can a person who declaimed a peerage inherit a
different peerage? I was under the impression that one couldn't.

I know that a disclaimed peer can't be created an hereditary peer
again, that should not stop him or her from inheriting another
peerage.

Indeed. There doesn't appear to be any provision in the Peerage Act
1963 preventing someone who has disclaimed a peerage from inheriting
another one. In addition, there isn't even a requirement that all
peerages be disclaimed - a peer with more than one peerage would seem
to be quite able to disclaim some and retain others. (This would of
course happen in any event if one or more of the peerages were Irish,
since Irish peerages cannot be disclaimed.)
