A significant period of widowhood, and she appeared to be occupying the estate of the family she married into.  The estate website seems to pride itself on belonging to the family for a period of time, which makes me wonder if her interest was only for life, and it will now default to a member of the Blackwood family; the current Baron Dufferin and Claneboye is an obvious candidate, but there are female line descendants of the Marquesses also.

The holder of the Dufferin barony lives in Australia. It is highly likely that the Irish estate has already been alienated, so that the holder of the Barony has no remaining interest(if he or his predecessors ever had such an interest). This is particularly so, given the costs of running the estate and that those costs  likely were contributed to from the Guiness family of whom both the widows of the 4th & 5th Marquesses were members.

In the interests of tradition it would be nice to see the estate with the current baron, but it will probably end up with the Irish National Trust or whatever equivalent they have in Ireland.

The Telegraph and Times have been prompt in getting their obits out, both in their editions of 28 Oct 2020:

The Times (it notes "Sheridan bequeathed Clandeboye to his wife, but with a letter telling her that she should sell the estate if it proved a burden."):
EXTRACT
The Marchioness of Dufferin and Ava obituary
Artist, yoghurt entrepreneur and colourful scion of the Guinness family who was painted by Hockney and dived with Cousteau

...She was born Serena Belinda Rosemary Guinness in 1941 in Scotland. Her father, Loel Guinness, a financier who was serving as a wartime group captain, had decreed that his young second wife, Lady Isabel (née Manners), daughter of the 9th Duke of Rutland, should cheer everyone up by giving birth at Prestwick airport. “New life in the middle of war, you know,” his daughter once said. She was raised by a series of nannies in Belvoir Castle, Leicestershire, the family seat of the dukes of Rutland.
...As a debutante she met Sheridan Hamilton-Temple-Blackwood, the 5th Marquess of Dufferin and Ava, her fourth cousin through their great-grandfather, Edward Guinness, 1st Earl of Iveagh. “The Guinness family is fairly big,” she explained. “But we all have the sense of us being from the same team.” Their wedding in Westminster Abbey in 1964 was attended by 2,000 guests, including Princess Margaret, and was widely reported by the international press. The couple divided their time between London and Clandeboye, her husband’s family estate 12 miles outside Belfast, where Sheridan’s widowed mother still ruled the roost. Restoring Clandeboye to its former glory was a big task: the estate had been in the Blackwood family since 1674 and the present house was built in 1801. The 1st Marquess of Dufferin and Ava, a friend of Queen Victoria, ambassador to Italy, France, Russia and Canada, and viceroy of India from 1884 to 1888, had shipped back boatloads of treasure from his travels. All of them needed sorting. “Empire is a dirty word now,” Dufferin said with some nostalgia in 2009. “But I think it’s important to face up to the fact that at one point Britain ruled the world.”
...Sheridan, whom she adored, died from an Aids-related illness in 1988 aged 49 and was described in one obituary as “basically homosexual”; the couple had no children. The marquessate died with him, although an older title, the barony of Dufferin and Clandeboye in the Irish peerage, passed to a relative in Australia. Sheridan bequeathed Clandeboye to his wife, but with a letter telling her that she should sell the estate if it proved a burden.
The Marchioness of Dufferin and Ava, artist and conservationist, was born on March 25, 1941. She died on October 26 2020, aged 79

Well the estate is actually in Northern Ireland, so perhaps the Trust. But also, there is perhaps a bit of stretch for her to transfer to her husbands  extremely distant cousin who lives in Australia if memory serves. I believe the barony went to the 10th Baron who was descended from the youngest son of the first Baroness, making the ties extremely tenuous.

Though I can't remember if I have this right or not, but was the heir to the Earldom of Abergavenny, but not the Marquessate invited to work with the estate? I believe the heir have their own, Birling Park, rings a bell, but it just strikes a note.
Even still, in todays day and age, outside of the 10th Duke of Beaufort inviting his first cousin, twice removed to come and aid with the management of the estate before he eventually inherited the title, how frequent does this actually happen.

The late Earl of Leicester invited a distant cousin from abroad to run the Holkham Hall estate prior to eventually inheriting the title

I would not call in the earl of leicester that you mention a first cousin distant. How much closer can you get than a first cousin ?
In this case it was the first cousin's son who came to Norfolk.

The estate was bought from creditors of the 4th Marquess (father-in-law of the deceased) by his widow Maureen Guinness, not unlike the Atholl estates, so no real "obligation" to pass to a Dufferin cousin.

Interesting to see though whether the estate becomes an independent trust with no financial benefit to the immediate family or passes in some beneficial way to the descendants of the 4th Marquess and Maureen Guinness.

The beneficiaries of Maureen's nephew Garech Browne raised some €30 million from his Irish estate.

Thanks for all the replies - I had not realised that the Guinness family had bought the estate from the creditors of the 4th Marquess.  I had also forgotten the 11th Baron was in Australia.

I think some Trust setup is likely as this is common these days.  I hope that the family maintain some ability to house a representative on the estate, again this being done in similar circumstances.

I had heard that Lady Dufferin was trying to persuade a niece to take over the place some day. That niece might be Chloe Guinness, who is married to Lord Reginald Vane-Tempest-Stewart, yr brother of the "new" Marquess of Londonderry.

My understanding is the house has already been in the ownership of a trust, obviously the hope is that whatever happens, the collection in the house remains there and there's not a great auction that disperses everything. Clandeboye itself isn't a terribly interesting or attractive house, it's the collection assembled by the 1st Marquess and perhaps a smattering of Hockneys and other modern pieces that Lindy and Sheridan might have acquired.
