William Maxwell Hitzig, M.D. was a well-known doctor in New York. A cardiologist and internist, he was a “society” doctor who made house calls even to non-famous patients. His patients included Pearl Bailey, Eugene Istomin, Haile Selassie, V.K. Krishna Menon, Norman Cousins, Dixie Carter, Joe Papp, Jennie Grossinger and other prominent individuals. More notably, he aided Japanese women from Hiroshima who had been disfigured by the atomic bomb, and Polish women victimized by Nazi medical experiments at Ravensbrück.
William Maxwell Hitzig was born 15 December 1904 at Bukowina, Austria to Maier Hitzig and his wife Jennie. He emigrated to the United States on the vessel Imperator, leaving Hamburg 28 May 1914 and arriving in New York on 3 June 1914. He was naturalized a U.S. citizen on 4 June 1929 in the District Court of Brooklyn, New York. He graduated from Columbia College in 1926 and Cornell University Medical College four years later, with subsequent training at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. He became an attending physician at Mount Sinai and at Doctors Hospital, and was an NYPD police surgeon and Assistant Professor of clinical medicine at Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons.
He married Candis Irene Hall (Buffalo, New York 25 May 1907—Lewisburg, West Virginia 12 January 2003) on 9 March 1934 at New Rochelle, Westchester Co., New York. She was the daughter of Myron Shelley Hall, banker (1877-1963) and his first wife Lillian Arthur (~1878—1925), and, after becoming the first woman to journey from New York to California in 1928, became one of the early female pilots when that was still rare, though she flew only for pleasure after the births of her children.
Together they had seven children, 4 sons and 3 daughters, between 1936 and 1949. I do not have the date that they divorced, but Candis married Frank Gullino (1915-1988) in 1970.
William M. Hitzig died on 27 August 1983 at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City, and was buried in Mount Hebron Cemetery, Flushing, Queens, New York.
The daughter of William Maxwell Hitzig and Candis Irene Hall, Candis Hall Hitzig, was born on 30 July 1936 in New York City. In 1954 she was one of 12 American debutantes presented to the Queen Mother and Princess Margaret.
