In my recent trawl through the latest Debrett's I made a note of any centenarians who were apparently still alive from the families of baronets and hereditary peers (up to the end of this year).  List below.  The list only includes those whose date or year of birth is given so doesn't include spouses of peers and baronets and their families and collaterals.  You will therefore not find the Countess of Avon or Fortune, Duchess of Grafton for example.  Frederic Hamilton's name is in italics as he must be dead as evidently the oldest known living man is aged 111 - I haven't at the moment however been able to find a note of his death

Colin,

Thanks as always for these lists - they must take hours to compile and require meticulousness.  I have checked some of the names that appear to be resident in England & Wales, and have found deaths:

-Agnew baronets - Denise Frances, nee Agnew
KNOWLES, DENISE  FRANCES    YoB 1917
GRO Reference:  DOR  Q4/2016 in East Sussex  (462-1C)  Entry Number 514602437

-Viscount Alanbrooke - Rosemary, nee Brooke. DB 2003 indicates resident in Hertfordshire, so I think this is correct, though MacDonald is a common surname.
MACDONALD, ROSEMARY      YoB 1918
GRO Reference:  DOR  Q2/2016 in Hertfordshire  (538-1I)  Entry Number 513764187

-Baron Dunboyne – Jean Butler-Kearney  [NB - though not noted in Debrett's, her birth registration includes a middle initial S]
BUTLER-KEARNEY, JEAN  SHIRLEY   YoB 1920
GRO Reference:  DOR  Q2/2016 in Surrey  (759-1J)  Entry Number 513781030

-Viscount Hill - Doreen Odell Mytton, nee Hill
REITH, DOREEN  O'DELL    YoB 1920
GRO Reference:  DOR  Q3/2012 in Kent  (564-1D)  Entry Number 507121665

-Rose baronets (1874) - Jean, nee Rose - Jean HALE is a common name, but this fits all the available facts.
HALE, JEAN      YoB 1915
GRO Reference:  DOR  Q2/2005 in North Devon  (4041B)  Reg B43C  Entry Number 283

-Baron Teynham - Anne, nee Trevor-Roper
MADDOCKS, ANNE      1916
GRO Reference:  DOR  Q4/2008 in Lancashire  (5911A)  Reg 1A004  Entry Number 134

Onto those in Scotland!

Thank you JKS for those details - you state the source as Ancestry, so I assume you are looking at Ancestry Member Trees. Whilst these are largely reliable, I have come across erroneous entries before, and where possible we should try to identify the primary source.

I have the following from GRO indices:

JOHNSTONE, VIOLET  MAY    YoB 1914
GRO Reference:  DOR  Q1/1998 in North Surrey  (7571F)  Reg NSF2  Entry Number 280

I am unable to verify a death for Elizabeth Maud SHAW in 1954 (or nearby years) in the GRO indices. The only death I can find is for a lady of that name in 1955, but aged 73, so born in circa 1882, so not correct. There are no deaths for an Elizabeth SHAW aged 40 or 41 in the range 1953-1955.

I am unable to verify a death for Frederic William Seymour HAMILTON in 1951 (or nearby years) in London, England. There is a death for a Frederic William HAMILTON in 1951 in Croydon, aged 71, so born circa 1880, so not the correct man.

Pyvery - you are quite right, I should have included the Countess of Avon under the Dukedom of Marlborough collaterals - I overlooked this

LINDSEY and ABINGDON E – Christine Caroline Bertie (descended from 3rd son of 6th Earl) b 25 Dec 1917

Not able to give a death here, but research gives much more than in Debrett's:
- She married 1942 Henry G BURGESS in Honiton (NB - error in FreeBMD transcription - middle initial for Christine should be C)
- Remarried 1953 Iwan BOJKO in Kensington (NB - transcribed under both Christine C BERTIE and Christine C BURGESS)

Iwan BOJKO dies 1984 Newcastle under Lyme. No death found for Henry BURGESS (maybe a WW2 death?). No children found. No death for Christine located; of course, she may be alive.

In working on this list, I've come across proof positive that some on it have made it to 100 years old, or were alive quite recently, and I think its useful to post that as confirmation, and to save people the time of searching for deaths that won't be found:

Definitely centenarians
Kenneth McAlpine OBE, born 21 Sept 1920, of the McALPINE baronets

Alwyne Arthur Compton Farquharson of Invercauld MC, born 1 May 1919, of the NORTHAMPTON marquesses
Noted also in centenary announcement in Daily Telegraph in May 2019 (see a post in this group)

Freda Violet Hodgson (formerly Buckley-Hinde nee Williams) born 26 September 1913, of the WILLIAMS baronets (ext)

The Hon Isobel Caroline Sales (formerly Roberts, nee Irby), born 4 May 1917, of the BOSTON barons
Found living in Electoral Roll records up to 2020 (Brighton)

Beaujolois Inez Cavendish (nee Wodehouse), born 7 February 1919, of the KIMBERLEY earls
See February 2019 item noting her 100th birthday.

Found living Age 99
The Hon Moira Rank (nee Hopwood), born December 1919, of the SOUTHBOROUGH barons (ext)
Found living in Companies House records - last directorship ended Sept 2019

I spent some time checking over the Ancestry trees for the names/dates given by JKS. Two are probably correct:

HAMILTON Bts - Frederic William Seymour HAMILTON -
Having checked an Ancestry tree with a death of 1951, I am relatively certain this is INCORRECT. The source given is a probate record which corresponds to the Frederic William HAMILTON who died that year, age 71. The index also gives the wrong wife's name in the index.  It was probably picked out by Ancestry's automatic "hint" finder, and then not properly checked by the tree owner (this is the usual source of errors I find, and they then are repeated across several trees which blindly copy information).

LONGFORD E – Norma Muriel Doreen Holmes nee Pakenham (descended from yst son of 1st Baron Longford) b 6 November 1913 of Washington USA
via Ancestry:
NORMA MURIEL PAKENHAM
b. 06 Nov 1913, British Columbia, Canada
d. 05 Jun 2014, King, Washington, USA (aged 100)
This seems to be correct - the source is the Washington Death index, and whilst I cannot read it all (not a worldwide member) it does support the above details.

DALRYMPLE-HAY Bt (1798) – Barbara Leleu nee Dalrymple-Hay (descended from 3rd son of 2nd Bt) b 9 Jun 1913 - of NSW, Aus
There are multiple Ancestry trees with this lady listed, only one gives a death of 2008 and there is no source given.  None of the trees containing her give reliable sourcing.

DALYELL Bt (1685) – Elizabeth Maud Shaw nee Collyer (descended from dau of 3rd Bt) b 1913
Unable to find any Ancestry Tree that gives a death date of 1954.

LINLITHGOW M – Jaqueline Hope (descended from 2nd son of 1st Earl of Hopetoun) b (22 Sept?) 1914 – of Norfolk
via Ancestry:
JAQUELINE ELIZABETH WEBLEY HOPE
b. 13 Jun 1914, place not given
d. 09 Jul 1951, Cyprus (aged 37)
The record given here is NOT the Jaqueline HOPE we are looking for - this is a cousin who was born in the same year, who was dau of Herbert Willes Webley HOPE. The Jaqueline HOPE we want was the dau of Charles Henry Sawyer HOPE (1880-1964) and Olive Lois GODWIN (died 1954), DB 2003 indicates she was found living in 1973.

MOSTYN B – Alfred Anson Lloyd (descended from brother of 1st Baron) b 27 Feb 1914 – of South Africa?
via Ancestry:
ALFRED ANSON LLOYD
b. 27 Feb 1914, Pietermaritzburg, South Africa
d. 08 Feb 1994, Durban, South Africa (aged 79)
This looks to be correct - the death date is supported by a reference from the South Africa Estates Death Index (though, again, cannot read it all), which gives the wife's name correctly.

I am able to confirm a birth date of 22 Sept - seen on 1939 Register with mother and sister - however birth indices indicate first name spelt Jacqueline.
When her father dies in 1964, he is listed as resident of 42 Telegraph St East, Norwich - both her and sister are listed as spinsters -  and this is the address given in DB 2003.  Her sister having died 1996, she seems to live at 42 Telegraph St East until 2011 according to Electoral Roll records, the house then being sold May 2012.

Some of these do not qualify for the lists that Colin produced - he restricted his listing to those in line to a title, or the daughters thereof.  Spouses and more distant female relatives therefore don't appear.

According to the National Portrait Gallery, Lady Ann BOWLBY died 1997, however I am unable to find any other verification of that, which is strange.

Phyllis Marion Rhoda HOBART does not appear in Debrett's 2003 or 1990.  On that basis I think she died long ago.  Burke's Peerage 105th edition 4th impression (?1980/1?) has her living, resident in Victoria, Australia.

Josephine Mary YORKE married twice, and according to DB 2003 resident in Mexico City.

Margaretta Anne COOTE married a MORRIS. No death found.

Here are a few additional centenarians (or potentially so this year) (and if still alive) outside the parameters I set in my original post:

ALDENHAM and HUNSDON B – Mary Elizabeth Gibbs, Baroness Aldenham (nee Tyser) (widow of the 5th Baron) b reg Q3 1921

BALFOUR E – Dorothy Melicent Anne Balfour (nee Yule), mother of the present Earl of Balfour b reg Q1 1921

BUCKMASTER V – Diana Constance Faure Walker, widow of 2nd Viscount, formerly Vane-Tempest and nee Seth-Smith b 3 June 1921

 GRAFTON D – Ann Fortune Fitzroy nee Smith GCVO (Fortune, Duchess of Grafton) b 24 Feb 1920 m 1946 the 11th Duke (d 2011)

Also the following are likely to be centenarians (from the date of their marriage) if still alive

MERRIVALE B – Colette Duke nee Wise m 1939 (div 1974) the 3rd Baron

MILNE B – Cicely Milne nee Leslie m 1940 the 2nd Baron – if she is Cicely Abigail (b 1911) she may have died 23 March 2016 (as thepeerage.com indicates and GRO index seems to confirm)    (so aged c 105 at death)

MUSKERRY B – Dorothy Anderton nee Cook m 1936 Hon Matthew Fitzmaurice Tilson Deane  and 2nd James Edward Anderton

There is little information about these two sisters in Debrett's indicating that this branch lost touch with the reference books.  I have done some searching in Ancestry, so treat this as needing confirmation:

She is described here as Helen D. Lenton (possibly using du Bois as a middle name?), but the facts seem to fit very well as the Johnston baronets are settled in Alabama.  The case is a controversy over her will / estate, so presumably she died in the early 90s.

Ursula Elspeth MALLOCH BROWN (or MALLOCH-BROWN) nee PELLY, born 31 Dec 1921, recently became a centenarian if still living.  She was of the vast PELLY baronetical family, being descended from the 5th son of the 1st baronet, and also mother of Baron MALLOCH-BROWN (born 1953, a life peer).  She can be found living in 2021 electoral records in Haywards Heath.

A few more...

ELLENBOROUGH B - Christopher Law (descendant of 5th son of 1st Baron) b 3 March 1921 – of Kent
According to Electoral Roll records he was living at an Ashford TN27 address (matches that in DB 2008) with a Florence A Law (his wife's name is given as Alison MITCHELL on the database, but on checking marriage records her full name was Florence Alison MITCHELL). He is shown on the roll until 2014, Florence until 2015.
I think Christopher died 2014 (GRO)
LAW, CHRISTOPHER             YoB 1921
GRO Reference:  DOR  Q3/2014 in KENT  (564-1Z)  Entry Number 510716103
Probate search gives a date of death of 17 August 2014 (probate registry Brighton) - this seems likely to be him.
(Florence) Alison died 2015:
LAW, FLORENCE  ALISON           YoB 1921
GRO Reference:  DOR  Q1/2015 in KENT  (564-1Z)  Entry Number 511745160
Probate search gives a date of death of 11 March 2015 (Brighton)

LIMERICK E – Cullen Pery-Knox-Gore (descendant of the 4th son of the 1st E) b 5 Nov 1917 – of South Africa? (His brother David Edmond Strachan b 1920 appears to have died 1993?)
When searching https://www.identitynumber.org/death-records-check.php  for the surname PERY-KNOX-GORE, Cullen appears in the search results, which suggests he died pre-2008.  Of note, his brother also appears in this search.  Further verification is needed.

FORBES L – Helen Mary Hay Thompson nee Forbes (descendant of 6th son of 17th L) b 1922
She appears to die 13 November 2003 in Australia
https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/153308057/helen-mary_hay-thompson

KENNAWAY Bt – Anne Scott nee Kennaway (grdau of 4th son of 2nd Bt) b 14 March 1922 – of East Sussex
Whilst the name Anne Scott is not great for searching, DB 2008 gives her address in Uckfield TN22, at which she is still found living on Electoral Roll records in 2021.

RENWICK Bt – Barbara Renwick (dau of 5th son of 1st Bt) b 11 January 1922 – of Suffolk
Found living in Electoral Roll records at a Newmarket CB8 address (matches that in DB 2008) up to 2018.  No death/probate record located since that date - possibly moved to a care home?

LAWSON B (Ext) – Hon Alma Lawson (dau of the 1st and last B) b 1920
I went back to Debrett's 1990 and found that the 1st Baron's wife had maiden name SCOTT.  I searched for Alma's birth and discovered in the GRO that her full name was Alma Averil LAWSON, born Q4 1920 Chester-le-Street

GRO death indices give the following death:
LAWSON, ALMA  AVRIL           YoB 1920
GRO Reference:  DOR  Q1/1986 in DURHAM NORTHERN  (4401)  Volume 1  Page 1405

Probate indices gives her date of death as 10 January 1986, and records her last address in Beamish, Chester-le-Street, an exact match to the residence given for the 1st Baron's widow in Debrett's 1990.

While this extract from a blog dated June 2010 doesn't help, it does gives some interesting information (and photo) about Miss Renwick and her family
Barbara Renwick at Upend was an interesting meet. She’s 87, I think she told me. She’s quite a character. We first talked at her gate for ages; and a couple of days later I called back and had a cup of tea in her dolls-house cottage. She was full of stories. As a 14-16 year old, she went to boarding college in Switzerland on Lake Geneva. A close friend, at a near-by boys’ college, was a similarly aged Ninian Stephen, much later to become Australia’s 20th Governor General and a judge of the High Court of Australia. She had stories about their time together skiing and bobsledding; and about his early years at the time. This was on the eve of and at the start of World War II. Barbara went on to join the WRAF and was active through the early years of the war in the groups that monitored the incoming German bombers as well as keeping track of Britain’s bombers over Germany. She then got her commission and went into the Intelligence arm of the WRAF. She had a special romance she still fondly remembers that abruptly ended when her boyfriend was killed in North Africa during the war. She spent many years as a caring aunt for her sister’s children after her sister died in childbirth. She never married.

Also the following are likely to be centenarians (from the date of their marriage) if still alive

A search for his name reveals that he is in this index (though a subscription is necessary to view), and this is the pre-2008 index, so he did not live to be a centenarian.

HEATHCOTE Bt (1733 of Hursley) – Robert William Heathcote (descendant of the 4th son of the 3rd Bt) b 1919 – of South Africa?
I believe his full date of birth is 1 March 1919 (https://www.identitynumber.org/death-records.php)
I think he died 2003.
His estate is listed in South Africa Government Gazette Legal Notices A dated 2003-06-13 number 25058 on Page 84 under the "Liquidation and distribution accounts in deceased estates lying for inspection" section, but no date of death is listed.
I believe his date of death would be listed in Gazette Number 24824 of the same year, but I have been unable to find a copy online.

Whilst here it is worth mentioning George Twycross HEATHCOTE (born 1918) of the same baronetage family, also descended from 4th son of 3rd Bt.  He is shown by Debrett's database as still living.
He died 26 August 2000, lately resident of the West Cape

GALLOWAY E – Keith Douglas b 1915 of Edenvale South Africa
I think Colin made an error with the name here - the gentleman concerned is Keith STEWART.
He died 21 March 2000

The above address exactly matches the address given in Debrett's 2008, so despite STEWART being a common surname, this is the correct person.

I found the following resource for searching British Columbia, Canada Probate records: https://justice.gov.bc.ca/cso/esearch/civil/deceasedSearch.do

It is reasonably useful if the name you are searching for is unusual, but the results don't seem to list the middle name (despite purporting to!), which makes more common names difficult to be sure of.  Unfortunately a number of the outstanding possible centenarians in BC have common surnames...

HAMILTON AND BRANDON D – Cecil Seymour Douglas-Hamilton (descended from uncle of 13th Duke) b 18 August 1916 – of British Columbia, Canada
Date of Death given as 19 July 2004

HAMILTON Bt (1646) – Frederic William Seymour Hamilton (descended from 3rd son of 5th Bt) b 29 Dec 1906 - British Columbia

I am not sure about this one as the surname HAMILTON is common, but we know this gentleman has to be dead given his age, so any possible record of his death should be looked at.

From British Columbia Probate indices (see last post)
Frederic HAMILTON, died 20 March 2004 (New Westminster Law Courts for probate).  DB 2008 gives his address as Chilliwack, which is approx 50 miles away from New Westminster.  Note lack of middle names in register, but Frederic is an uncommon spelling of his first name.

Particularly directing this to Colin as he is the "owner" of this thread, and also prolific in adding new names to the list of centenarians, but welcome all views.

Do you think we should reboot this discussion in a new thread?  Much like we have done for the Debrett's corrections.

I think it would also be useful to have a "live" list of centenarians - much of this thread is lists produced by Colin, followed by various posters finding deaths before their centenary.  Deaths of centenarians are also listed outside this thread as they occur when Richard/others pick them up from newspaper notices. Trying to work out who is possibly still living is quite difficult.

I've started work on this here, working in Google Docs.  Currently I have transcribed the list of Centenarians born in 1920 or earlier, including my notes.  I have also transcribed many of the deaths of centenarians that have come to light in 2022 on a second tab.   My current aims are:
- to update the Living tab with all the 1921 and 1922 births listed earlier in this thread by Colin (and not otherwise found to be deceased)
- over time to include as many centenarian deaths throughout history.  I have a listing of 2021 deaths from my 2021 births & deaths thread which will be a useful starting point.
