What uniform was Edward wearing--it's an odd color?

He was wearing the uniform of The London Scottish, which is a company
of the London Regiment; the London Regiment is a territorial battalion
of the Guards Division. The plain kilt is known as Hodden Grey, a
homespun Scottish cloth. Since Wessex' failure to pass through the
Royal Marines, he has usually been confined to wearing the uniforms of
territorial units (the American equivalent is the Reserve or National
Guard).

Is there some protocol as to which Royals do and do not wear uniforms
to this event? I've noticed that the Duke of York and Prince Michael
of Kent never seem wear one.

Also, what dictates who rides behind the Queen on horseback? In what
capacity are they there?

Edward is Colonel of the London Regiment :
'The Queen has been pleased to appoint HRH The Earl of Wessex KG GCVO
ADC
to be the first Royal Honorary Colonel of The London Regiment, from
the 1 May 2011.'
http://www.army.mod.uk/infantry/regiments/24084.aspx

History of The London Scottish :
'A (London Scottish) Company, based at Westminster and Catford, can
trace its descent from the Highland Armed Association of London and
the Loyal North Britons, which had been raised in 1793 and 1803.

In 1859 the London Scottish Rifle Volunteers were raised, sponsored by
the Highland Society and the Caledonian Society of London, and
commanded by Lieutenant-Colonel Lord Elcho. The soldiers were given a
uniform of homespun cloth known as Hodden Grey to avoid inter-clan
rivalry and kilts today are still made of this distinctive material.

During the Boer War, the Regiment supplied contingents of Volunteers
who served with the Gordon Highlanders and those links survive still.
In 1908 the Volunteer Force ceased to exist and became the Territorial
Force. The 7th Middlesex (London Scottish) Volunteer Rifle Corps
changed its name to the 14th (County of London) Battalion, The London
Regiment (London Scottish).

The 1st Battalion was mobilised on 5 August 1914 and was the first
Territorial battalion to go into action against the Germans at
Messines, near Ypres on 31 October. The Battalion continued to serve
in France and Flanders throughout the War taking part in all the major
offensives. The 2nd Battalion served in France, the Balkans and
Palestine, while a 3rd Battalion was a Reserve Battalion and supplied
drafts to the other two. Two Victoria Crosses and nineteen
Distinguished Service Orders were awarded to members of the Regiment.

In 1920 the 1st Battalion was raised again on a peacetime basis. The
Honorary Colonel was Field Marshal Earl Haig from 1919-1928 and he was
succeeded in 1935 by HRH The Duchess of York, later HM Queen
Elizabeth, and then HM Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother. In 1936, the
Battalion appeared in the Army List as a Territorial Battalion of the
Gordon Highlanders and two years later recruited the 2nd Battalion.
The 3rd Battalion was formed from those on the waiting list, as a
Heavy Anti-Aircraft unit titled 97th HAA Regiment RA, TA (The London
Scottish).

The Regiment reformed in 1947 and following the TA restructuring of
1967, formed G (London Scottish) Company 1st Battalion 51st Highland
Volunteers. On the formation of The London Regiment in 1992 it became
A (London Scottish) Company.

Interesting!! The Duke of Kent is the age of my late father--perhaps
next year Harry will replace him at Trooping the Colour??

I've not seen Trroping the Colour for a while but I think it is now
just the royal colonels.

Gone are the days when the military attaches from foreign powers
joined the Sovereign.

This year, I believe, was just The Duke of Cornwall [i.e Prince of
Wales], Duke of Cambridge, Duke of Kent and the Princess Royal
riding.
Prince Harry and the Dukes of York and Gloucester [not sure he was
even there till the balcony] and the Earl of Wessex were in
carriages.

No mention of the Prince quitting the active duty Royal Marines.....

from
The Earl of Wessex spent three years in the Royal Marines as a University Cadet but, after graduating from Cambridge, decided to leave to pursue a career in theatrical production.

Don't you think "decided to leave" covers it?

These four are all colonels in the Household Division.
