From the Daily Telegraph 12 October 2024 - GUNN OF GUNN Iain Gunn of Gunn MBE, Chief of Clan Gunn, much loved husband, father and grandfather died peacefully on 9th October 2024 in Caithness. Funeral private at his own request. Memorial to be announced later.

He appears in the last print Burke's PB as Iain Alexander Gunn of Banniskirk and Commander of Clan Gunn by commission of Lord Lyon 1972 with a note that the leadership of Clan Gunn was in transition and that the Chiefship had been unresolved since 1785 and the Clan had been led by a Commander. The note continues that Lord Lyon had accepted the descent of the Chiefship to the heir but the formalities had not yet been completed.

The formalities were completed in 2016 when the Lord Lyon recognised Iain Gunn as Chief of the Name and Arms of Gunn of Gunn.

There is much of interest about the history of the search for a Chief and the recognition of the Late Iain Gunn as Chief on the Clan Society website -  Home - Clan Gunn Society
See particularly the tabs Chief's Message (which includes a note of his death) and under "About Us" Chiefship and Clan History.

Iain Alexander b 1933 was the son of John Bain GUNN resident in THurso and Dunfermline, sometime of Banniskirk and Commander of Clan Gunn d 1946.  He m 1963 Aline Lavender JAMES and had issue:-

- John William Gunn of Gunn yr now the Chief of Clan Gunn  - it seems from the Clan Gunn Society website home page that he has a dau Charlotte who is stated to have become his heir

- Helen Mary Aline

Those of you of a certain age may be interested to know that Iain Gunn's wife Aline is known as Bunty and as Bunty James was one of the presenters of the late 1960's and 1970's educational ITV children's series "How" along with Jack Hargreaves, Jon Miller and Fred Dinenage (father-in-law of the life peer Lord Lancaster of KImbolton).  As a child I wasn't allowed to watch ITV children's television but an exception was made for How. She was b 1933 in Cumberland

Very sad news,as I met him and his now widow 'Bunty' Gunn,on more than a few occassions, during past Halkirk Games in Caithness, which was usually co-hosted by both the Clan Gunn Society and its local Clan Sinclair equivalent, headed by the Viscount Thurso and the Earl of Caithness.

Iain was always very amicable and well versed in both Gunn & Sinclair clan lore.

P.S. I,also, remember the original How TV programme.
