Burke's L.G. 1847, under WOLFERSTAN of Statfold Hall (the original name, Wolferston, allegedly deriving from that place in Suffolk, having been changed in the senior line of the family in 1667), shows the marriage of Rev. William Chanter, curate of Hartland, and Mary, dau. of Edward Wolferstan; this family descends from them, as follows.
William Chanter (1766-1859) of Ilfracombe, Devon; for over 70 years, perpetual curate of Hartland, Devon. His will witnessed by two daughters; son William Wolferstan Chanter (1795-1871) of Exeter, M.D., m. 1841, Georgina Frances [Dodsley-] (-1874), dau. of William Dodsley[-]Flamstead, of Derby [s. of Rev. Richard Dodsley Flamstead (né Dodsley), M.A. (Cantab.), and Dorothy, dau. of William Greaves, of Mayfield and Ingleby, Staffs (see GREAVES of Staffordshire, BLG 1879)] and his wife (also his cousin) Georgina, dau. of Rev. George Greaves, of Stanton by Bridge and Swarkston, Derbys.
W. W. Chanter's son, of the same name (1843-1874), of Maryfield, Exeter, m. 1869, Gertrude, dau. of Rev. John Allen. Their son, Francis Forbes Wolferstan Chanter (1869-1922), of Lyonesse, 87, Coldharbour Road, Westbury Park, formerly of Woodfield Road, Bristol, was educ. Downing Coll., Cantab., and m. 1893, Charlotte Gertrude (1872-1948), dau. of - Lacey, of Exmouth.
The second son of F. F. W. Chanter, William George Wolferstan Chanter (1900-1940) was Chief Officer on Merchant Navy steam vessel 'Matina', and died in its sinking by a u-boat. His younger brother, Edward Roylands Wolferstan Chanter (1905-1942), was Master of the 'Montreal City', which met a similar fate in 1942. W. G. W. Chanter, by his wife (m. 1926) Winifred M. Phillips, was father of David Wolferstan Chanter, as above.
