Here's a hypothetical title question that could come true.

It is 20 years from now, and King William V sits on the throne.  His eldest son, Prince George, is now the Prince of Wales.  His second son, Prince Louis, is getting married.

Since hereditary titles have been unpopular, and in an effort to scale back the size of the Royal Family, King William decides to deviate from tradition and not grant Prince Louis a dukedom, or any hereditary title at all.

Would Prince Louis be known simply as "Prince Louis of the UK?"  And what would his children be titled, if at all?

I ask this in comparison to modern times, when, for instance, there is Prince Harry, but he is also the Duke of Sussex, so his children are Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet of Sussex.

Thanks.

Brooke

Of course that has happened before - when sons of the Monarch are unmarried they are formally HRH The Prince Forename.  The definite article is part of their title.

So both before and after marriage in this situation Louis would be The Prince Louis.  If no other title was given, his wife would be HRH The Princess Louis. (NB I am not absolutely certain if the definite article is included for his wife - does anyone know for sure?)

I agree that no more hereditary titles for cadet lines is a possibility.  However, I still think some life title could be granted as with Edward & Duke of Edinburgh.  Cambridge will be available

Henry, thanks for your response.

If that's the case, what would their children's titles be?  Would it be "Lord or Lady (first name) Mountbatten-Windsor?"
