Aristocrat’s country estate with Chaucer link on the market for £3.5m
For the first time in centuries, Sir Benjamin Slade lists the ‘un-stateliest home in England’ for sale
An estate owned by a millionaire aristocrat who once launched a public pursuit for a “lady of the house” is for sale for £3.5m.
The Grade II*-listed Maunsel House has been owned by Sir Benjamin Slade, 79, since his father, Sir Michael Nial Slade, died in 1962.
The 13-bedroom property in Somerset was placed in receivership in June 2024, with a view to be sold to cover Sir Benjamin’s debts.
It is now coming to the market for the first time in centuries. The estate includes the main house, two cottages and over 11 acres of parkland.
The estate has a rich history – it previously hosted Alfred the Great and Queen Matilda, and is said to be where Geoffrey Chaucer wrote The Canterbury Tales [….]
