What a coincidence, I just finished the genealogy of the Marquesses of Northampton when I saw this update. Henry's father, Lt-Cdr Clare George Compton took the surname of Vyner by Royal License on 30 March 1912. What was the reason for it exactly?

Well, the estates now belong to the National Trust, but it seems that he inherited the Studley Royal property from the Marquess of Ripon, his cousin through his mother's Vyner family. Usually the name change would signify that he inherited Vyner estates, not Robinson estates. Perhaps he got some Vyner stuff, too?

It would appear that, when Lt-Cdr Clare George Compton took the surname of Vyner, it may have been in anticipation that he would one day inherit his mother's Vyner estates. His elder brother, Maj Edward Robert Francis COMPTON (14 XII 1891 - 7 II 1977), was heir presumptive to the Marquessate of Northampton from 1915 until the present 7th Marquess was born on 2 April 1946. As he did not, in the event, succeed to the Marquessate, the remaining Vyner estates have passed down his line, and his grandson, Richard Clephane COMPTON (born 18 IV 1957) now lives in Newby Hall, Ripon, Yorkshire. The former principal seat of the Vyner family, Gautby Hall in Lincolnshire, was demolished in 1874.

But long before he became a Peer.
