Obit in the Times of 16 Sep 2023:

Sir Timothy Daunt obituary

Popular ambassador to Turkey with a rigorous intellect and a fondness for irreverent nicknames

There are diplomats who are perhaps not always deserving of that name. They can be cloyingly urbane, or abrasive thrusters, or pompous I-said-to-His-Apostolic-Majesty bores. Timothy Daunt was not that kind of diplomat.

Certainly, he had many of the conventional virtues of his profession. Although surprisingly shy, he was meticulous, knowledgeable and clear-minded, with a rigour of intellect that allowed him to see through problems, especially those in the sphere of defence to which he dedicated much of his career…

…At the embassy in Ankara, he was private secretary to the ambassador, Sir Bernard Burrows. Also stationed there was Patricia Knight, and in 1962 she and Daunt were married, proving perfect foils for one another. He was low-key and happy to leave the stage to her. Patricia survives him with their three children. James founded the eponymous chain of bookshops and is managing director of Waterstones and, in the US, is the chief executive of Barnes & Noble. Eleanor works in Italy for Ortigia, the fragrance company. Alice has her own travel business…

… His unusually long stint at the embassy left its mark not least on its junior staff, who adored an ambassador who would do his own photocopying…

...Timothy Lewis Achilles Daunt was born in 1935 at Brecon in Powys, where his schoolmaster father was teaching. The Daunts were an Anglo-Irish family of clergymen — Achilles commemorated a great-grandfather who was Dean of Cork — and public servants. Leslie, his father, opened a prep school in Devon, while his mother, Margery, taught gymnastics. After Sherborne School, Daunt did his National Service with the 8th King’s Royal Irish Hussars in Germany before reading history at St Catharine’s College, Cambridge…

…After a riding accident in Jordan left Patricia tetraplegic, her husband cared for her selflessly, rising to the challenge of running the household and broadening his repertoire as a cook.

Daunt, who was appointed CMG in 1982 and advanced to KCMG in 1989, retired in 1995. He spent five years as lieutenant-governor of the Isle of Man. The couple’s hearts, however, remained closely entwined with Turkish culture.

Sir Timothy Daunt, diplomat, was born on October 11, 1935. He died of the effects of cerebral vasculitis on August 5, 2023, aged 87
