Fears for missing British actor Julian Sands after California mountain hike
Julian Sands, the British actor known for roles in A Room
with a View and Arachnophobia, was feared dead last night after failing to
return from a hike in Southern California.
He was reported missing by a friend a week ago. He had been
hiking in the area of Mount Baldy, a 10,000ft peak about 50 miles east of Los
Angeles, according to San Bernardino County sheriff’s department.
...It is understood that his son,
Henry, 37, was in California helping with the search yesterday.
...The last successful cell phone “ping” was Sunday [15 Jan], after
which his phone has not communicated, probably because it has lost power,
police said.
A silver Volvo believed to belong to Sands was found on
Wednesday night [18 Jan], covered in snow.
Rescuers began searching for Sands shortly after the alarm
was raised but the operation was paused on Saturday evening [14 Jan], about 24 hours
after it began, due to the condition of the trail and the risk of avalanches.
The search with helicopters and drones is continuing as weather conditions
allow, and the ground search will resume when it is safe, the sheriff’s
department said.
...Sands has been married twice and has three children. Henry
is his son from his first marriage, to Sarah Sands, the former editor of the
BBC Radio 4 Today show. The marriage lasted from 1984-87. Sands married the
author Evgenia Citkowitz in 1990 and they have two daughters, Natalya, 26, and
Imogen, 23.
...During the Covid lockdowns Sands told the Thrive Global website
that he had wept upon completing a trail a few days before the interview...“A lot of time people who don’t climb mountains assume it is
about this great heroic sprint for the summit. And somehow this great
ego-driven ambition. But actually it’s the reverse. It’s about supplication and
sacrifice and humility, when you go to these mountains.
...Sands has also spoken of his joy in hiking the local trails
near Los Angeles.
...Cassian Elwes, the British film producer, said he had known
Sands was missing since last Friday [13 Jan] and was “devastated”.
Samuel West, the actor and director, tweeted: “Please,
please let Julian Sands be okay. A friend and an inspiration. Awful news.”
Matthew Modine, the American actor, said that Sands is “a wonderful man,
husband, father, and friend to so so many. A gentle, kind soul. Keep candles
burning for his safe return from the mountain he loves.”

Julian Sands confirmed to have died in California mountains
Byronesque British actor who brought a dour romanticism to an eclectic range of films
With corn-yellow hair, a fine-boned face and a Byronesque attraction to women, Julian Sands made his name as the dourly romantic George Emerson striding across a field to kiss the strong-willed character played by Helena Bonham Carter in A Room with a View (1985), adapted for the screen by Merchant and Ivory…
…After the film’s release, which established Sands as a heart-throb, he was inundated with offers of roles, yet he was impossible to typecast. He played Percy Bysshe Shelley, declaiming poetry buck-naked in a thunderstorm for Ken Russell’s Gothic (1986); appeared with Jodie Foster, to whom he was once romantically linked, in the sultry Siesta (1987); and was the title character, a son of Satan, in the horror flick Warlock (1989)…
… By then he had settled in America where, despite his clear potential as a Hollywood leading man, he became trapped in a character actor’s career…
…In 1993 he starred in Boxing Helena, a film from which both Madonna — another star with whom he was romantically linked…
… Julian Richard Morley Sands was born in Otley, West Yorkshire, in 1958, the fourth of five sons of Billy Sands, a soil analyst, and his wife Brenda (née Leach), a secretary and Tory councillor. His siblings were Robin, Jeremy, Nicholas and Quentin. Their parents divorced when Julian was three and his mother raised the three youngest boys alone in Gargrave, near Skipton, while the older two moved to the East Riding with their father.
“My family were agricultural, not theatrical people,” said Sands, who as a boy joined in archaeological digs with the University of Leeds. “My childhood was like something out of Swallows and Amazons, we climbed trees and scrabbled in mud and streams. I did love acting in the village pantos though, and I still remember my very first line, aged five, ‘My master, the great Ali Baba!’”…
…While at a drama school party he met Sarah Harvey, a journalist who, as Sarah Sands, became editor of The Sunday Telegraph, the Evening Standard and Radio 4’s Today programme. They were married in 1984 and had a son, Henry, who now runs his own company, Sabi Strategy Group. But after a couple of years, Sands left for New York and eventually Hollywood. “I went for two weeks to chill out, but then I found myself staying,” he admitted. “I suppose it was a bit traumatic, but the marriage was unwinding.” It was dissolved in 1987…
…For a few years his private life was complicated. He met Evgenia Citkowitz, a Guinness heiress and model, while staying with Malkovich in New York. “There was an instant frisson of attraction and confusion because I didn’t want to get involved, but it was a seismic event in my life,” he recalled. They were married in 1990 and she survives him with their daughters, Natalya and Imogen, as does Henry, and his grandson Billy, with whom he had a “sweet relationship”…
…Home, or “base camp” as he called it, remained on the west coast, and it was from there that Sands, an experienced climber, set off earlier this year to hike on Mt Baldy, in the mountains of southern California…
Julian Sands, actor, was born on January 4, 1958. He was pronounced dead on June 27, 2023, aged 65, after going missing on a hike in January
