According to the Daily Mail, twin boys have been born to the Marquess
and Marchioness of Cholmondeley. The birth was initially expected in
January, then scheduled for December, and then after some apparent
complications, happened this month (three months premature?).

The elder son is the heir apparent to the title.

One of the greatest if not the greatest piece of peerage news since I
have had the privilege to be part of this group!

My first thought: Wow! Maybe pigs do fly after all! I think I speak
for most of us regulars on this site in saying that we had given up
all hope for this title.

However, in reality, we can only hope that the new Earl of Rocksavage
and his twin will be OK. Three months premature does seem to be a
concern to this layperson.

Congratulations to the new parents!

Yes I had dared not express such views, but I recall my elation when
reading about the birth of twin to the current marquess of
Abbergavenny back in nineteen ninety and then to subsequently read of
the death of his only son a few months later. Well let us hope that
all is well with the boys, tech has moved on and each day they will
grow stronger.

26 weeks 80%
27 weeks 90%
28-31 weeks 90-95%

I have always felt a great unfairness has existed re twins being born
by Caesarian section
& where a peerage title is up for grabs. Does the gynaecologist
actually go in and select
the next Marquess of Cholmondeley at random ? Apparently not. A close
friend who is
a midwife assures me that Baby 1 and Baby 2 are so positioned that the
first
born is always pre-determined by his position in the womb.

In France the first born of twins is deemed to be the last to appear.
The principle is based on "first in, last out"

Yes but in France there aren't any marquisates that are governed by an
offical law of succession.

I am afraid, both of you are mistaken :
- in France lot of people tell that the second to appear is the elder.
But at the Etat-civil in each Mairie the first to appear is written
down as "jumeau 1", meaning the first born.
- We have still official laws governing official titles from baron to
duc. The fact is that we don't have a lot of official titles and, but
for the title of duc, we never care about them. "Anciennete,
illustration, alliances" are the only real thing here.

Yes and also what will the heir be styled as, Lord Newburgh and
Newborough, Viscount Malpas, the Earl of Malpas, or the Earl of
Rocksavage. I had always thought that latter sounded too much like pop
star. Will the marquess take the same view as his compatriot the
marquess of Bute who did not style his son Earl of Dumfries until he
was 18?

Great news! I hadn't even realised Cholmondeley had married.

While most parents of twins are preoccupied with deciding on names in
the days after the birth, the Marquess and Marchioness of Cholmondeley
have been faced with a much thornier dilemma.

By Richard Eden
Published: 10:52PM GMT 07 Nov 2009

David Cholmondeley, 49, and Rose, 25, who married at Chelsea Town Hall
in June, have to decide which of their sons will be the heir to the
peer's title and estimated £60 million fortune, which includes one of
England's finest country houses, Houghton Hall, in Norfolk, and a
7,500-acre estate in Cheshire.

Usually, it would be the son who entered the delivery room first, but
as they were born last month by Caesarean section, their parents have
come up with their own, idiosyncratic, solution.

------

I am assured that this report is misleading and that twins born by
Caesarian
section are always designated Twin 1 and Twin 2 in the womb.
