As an American, I admit I am not that familiar with the nominating process for peerages, so I need some help in trying to understand this latest development.

How can a former PM, in office for only 49 days, end up being allowed to appoint 3 new members of the House of Lords?

I know previous PM's have nominated their supporters in the past, which I understand.  It's just surprising to me (and I'm sure to others) that she did so after spending only 49 days as PM, but I guess that's the system.

A question-- would there have been anything prohibiting her (or any other PM, for that matter) from nominating themselves for a peerage?
