Mark Sykes obituary
Art dealer, gun smuggler, gambler, jailbird, bookie, womaniser, racing driver and all-round upper-class rake known as Mayfair Mark
...Mark Richard Sykes was born in 1937, the son of the playwright Christopher Sykes, a friend and biographer of Evelyn Waugh, whose novels Mark appeared to regard as life manuals. His mother, Camilla (née Russell), was descended from the 6th Duke of Bedford and is believed to have had a discreet affair with George VI immediately after the Second World War. “Christopher didn’t mind,” Tom recorded. “He joked about the affair with his friends, performing an imitation of the monarch seducing his wife as a party piece that mocked the traces of Germanic in the king’s accent and began ‘Kommen sie hier, mein little flower . . .’”
Mark was a nephew of the Countess of Antrim and cousin of the prominent dandy Sir Tatton Sykes, Bt, who inherited the family seat, the magnificent Sledmere House in the East Riding of Yorkshire. He was also a grandson of Sir Mark Sykes, Bt, the orientalist, writer and adviser to Lord Kitchener, commemorated in the Sykes-Picot agreement that dismembered the Ottoman Empire. Sir Mark died in Paris in 1919, aged 39, from the Spanish flu; in 2008 his body, which had been sealed in a lead casket, was exhumed for research purposes....
...He eloped to Paris with the heiress Suna Portman, niece of Viscount Portman, and their engagement was announced in 1958. Almost immediately their plans were abandoned, to the relief of her family...
...[Helen] Homewood, an Australian model who had come to London. Sykes followed her to Melbourne in 1962. “Playboy weds model,” ran one headline when they married... their marriage was dissolved after three years. “I was married quite long enough,” Sykes declared, rather ungallantly...
...[in 1968] he married Valerie Goad, a model who became a fashion designer, in a secret ceremony in Gibraltar... The couple had six children: Victoria, known as Plum, a New York-based Vogue writer and author; her twin sister Lucy, a journalist, also based in the US; Alice, who worked for Lulu Guinness’s handbag company and later joined her sisters in America; Tom, who lives in Ireland and is the author of What Did I Do Last Night?, about overcoming addiction; Frederick; and Joshua.
...[he] later married Alexandra Sotomayor [b 1953 & d Q2 2020 reg Lambeth - GRO entry], known as Sandy, who was from Ecuador; she died from Covid-19 two years ago.
Mark Sykes, art dealer, gambler and wastrel, was born on June 9, 1937. He died of undisclosed causes on March 9, 2022, aged 84
