When his wife Joanne declared she was leaving him just days after
their silver wedding anniversary, the Earl of Bradford's stable life
came to an abrupt end.
The sensitive aristocrat, unaware the woman he had fallen for on a
blind date had drifted away from him, was devastated.
But after an acrimonious divorce in which the former Jo Miller walked
away with a £10 million settlement, I can reveal the 60-year-old Earl
has again found love.
Bearded foodie Richard Bradford has, I can disclose, just become
engaged to attractive blonde doctor Penny Law, the mother of one of
his daughter's close friends at Rugby School. The couple began a
romance after meeting at the school's speech day.
Penny, 46, will become the new Countess of Bradford in August or
September and father-of-four Richard is hoping to organise the wedding
at the village church near Weston Park, his family's former stately
home in Shropshire.
Says a delighted Bradford, who owns Porters restaurant in Covent
Garden: "My eldest son Alexander was thrilled when I asked him if he
would be my best man.
"All the children are thrilled - especially my daughter Alicia,
because it was she who introducedme to Penny at a school prize-giving
day. I was going through what I now call my limbo period. It was
nothing to do with limbo dancing, but I was in limbo as far as my life
was concerned."
Romance blossomed for Bradford and Penny after his marriage break-up
three years ago when he invited her to the opera. Penny, who is a
consultant obstetrician at Dublin's Coombe Maternity Hospital, will
look for a new position in England when her contract expires in six
months' time.
And what of Richard's former wife Joanne? The 51-year-old divorcee,
who is now on amicable terms with Bradford, has fallen in love with
debonair, retired investment banker, Philip Porter, 59.
SAYS Joanne: "I am very happy for Richard. I've known Penny even
longer than he has and they are perfect for each other." Like her ex-
husband, Joanne can thank her family for her new love. The couple met
after Joanne's sister Alexis, the wife of Michael Howard's stepson
Sholto Douglas-Home, saw Porter on holiday in Portugal and told him:
"I think you would be perfect for my sister. Here is her telephone
number."
The rest is romantic history and the couple will soon set sail for a
Caribbean break on a friend's yacht.
