Now, why is that? Did the couple want to avoid publicity
(understandable), or is it because both sets of parents divorced,
presumably after big society "do"s, or because neither of them believe
in a religious ceremony? There might be other reasons, of course.
Have there been any other genuine aristocratic matches celebrated in
the registry office? I mean, the daughter of a peer (or a peeress in
her own right) marrying the son of another peer (or a peer in his own
right). The late Marquess of Bath and his first wife Daphne married
secretly in a registry office circa 1927, but that was because both
sets of parents opposed the match according to her obituary and their
eldest surviving son Lord Bath's online memoirs. This caused problems
for them when they divorced and remarried, IIRC.
Shinjinee
This seems to have fizzled out. Some say HMs attendance at society
weddings
was curtailed at the start of the troubles in Ulster. Similarly, the
Queen's weekend visits to
great houses also appears to have ended. She always spent her wedding
anniversary (or the
weekend closest to it) at Luton Hoo (the Wernher pile). This ended
with the demise of Sir
Harold and Lady Zia. Each year she spent the dates of the Goodwood
Races alternating twixt Goodwood
(Duke of Richmond) and Arundel Castle (Duke of Norfolk). This
tradition also ended in the
70s. The Dukes of Richmond and Norfolk jokingly blame each other for
the Queen's absence.
The Earl of Halifax married Mrs Camilla Parker Bowles at a London
Register
Office with the Prince of Wales in attendance as best man. Charles's
only
visit to a register office until his own nuptials at Windsor in 2005.
