Sir Patrick Ashley Cooper (1887-1961) was the late head of the LG
family Cooper of Hexton Manor. There's no obvious connection with the
earls of Shaftesbury. Sir Patrick's mother was Mary Cook of Ashley,
Aberdeenshire and that is where, I imagine, the Ashley used in his
name and some of his descendants originates. Sir Patrick was married
to Kathleen dau of James Spickett, of Pontypridd, Glamorgan and they
had a son and three daus, all of whom had Ashley among their names.
The son IS the James Patrick Ashley Cooper you refer to (born 1925)
and his wife is Felicity Anne Yorke (b 1931) the dau of Maj John
Edward Evelyn Yorke (1904-97) of the LG family Yorke of Halton Place,
formerly of Bewerley Hall, and his wife Eleanor CBE (d 2000) yst dau
of Sir Ralph Cockayne Assheton, 1st Bt (whose son was cr Baron
Clitheroe). Mr and Mrs James Ashley Cooper have four children:
1 Patrick John Ashley Cooper b 1957
2 Edward James Ashley Cooper b 1966
1 Katharine Mary Cooper b 1956
2 Felicity Cooper b 1961
Through the Yorkes there are connections with the earls of Haddington
and the LG family of Stansfeld of Dunninald, among others.
Reverting to Sir Patrick’s 3 daus, (1) Diana Mary Ashley Cooper b 1918
& d 1926; (2) Cynthia Kathleen Ashley Cooper b 1920 m 1st 1947 Patrick
Duncan (d 1967) eldest son of Rt Hon Sir Patrick Duncan GCMG KC LLD
and Alice dau of Victor Dold, of Kokstad, Cape Province, S . Africa
and had two sons and two daughters. Mrs Duncan m 2nd 1971 Sir Paul
Elmore Oliver Bryan , DSO, MC, MP son of late Rev Dr J. T. I. Bryan,
MA, BD, PhD, of Milton Ernest, Bedford; (3) Patricia Jane Ashley
Cooper b 1921, m 1954 Rev Ralph Edward Pearce-Serocold (b 1916) son of
late Brig-Gen Eric Pearce-Serocold CMG (1827-1926) of the LG family of
that name of Ashe House and his 2nd wife Hon Blanche Florence Daphne
Stanley (d 1968) dau of 4th Baron Sheffield and Stanley of Alderley.
Patricia Jane and Ralph Edward P-S had a son (John Charles b 1958) and
a daughter (Mary Elizabeth b 1958).
(Note there's no hyphen between Ashley and Cooper. You’ll note the
daus of the present head of the family do not have Ashley among their
names.)
