Hi all

I have a question... Is there a connection between The Earls of Berkshire and people with the surname Berkshire?  This is of course generally speaking, as I know each individual case may have different circumstances.
Just wonder of the possibility or chances that surname is connected to the Earls.
Thanks

David Chaplin, City investment manager who thrived despite his disability – obituary

The key to his success was his ability to connect with everyone. His address book was vast, his voice loud, his appetite for gossip unfading

David Chaplin, who has died aged 71, overcame severe disability to become a much-loved City investment manager and to enjoy a full sporting life.

Known universally as “Chappers”, he made his name managing private client funds as a partner of the stockbrokers Rowe & Pitman before he was recruited to be the first chief executive of JO Hambro (now Waverton) Investment Management – a firm created in 1986 by the brothers Rupert, Richard and James Hambro when they left their family’s historic merchant bank to create their own corporate advisory and investment boutique…..

“I have short arms and no proper hands,” he explained matter-of-factly to a journalist who profiled him at Hambros. “I was born with my legs sticking out and had calipers to try and straighten them.” Determined that their son should lead a normal life, his parents decided when he was six that, rather than use a wheelchair for life, he should have his legs amputated and gain limited mobility with prosthetic limbs….

David Frank Chaplin descended on his father’s side from the Earls of Cork and on his mother’s from Northumberland baronets. He was born on October 6 1951 to Major Richard Chaplin, a stockbroker in Birmingham after Army service, and Susan, née Ridley – and was followed by a sister, Serena, and brother, Mervyn. Their childhood home, commanded by a fearsome nanny known as the Duchess, was Stoke Albany House in Northamptonshire….

The key to his successes was his ability to connect with everyone, high and low. His address book was vast, his voice loud and his appetite for gossip – and lunch – unfading.

Merriment and conviviality surrounded his sporting passions as much as his professional commitments. He was an accomplished fisherman on the Helmsdale in Scotland and surprisingly good with a 20-bore, running shoots on the family farm near Market Harborough and at Woodnook, on his lifelong friend Neil McCorquodale’s Stoke Rochford estate in Lincolnshire.

He was also a demon at croquet, a debenture holder at Twickenham, a member of MCC and owner of a reputedly slow racehorse called Sheer Delight.

He never married, but for many years shared much of his domestic life with his brother Mervyn and sister-in-law Nicky, and their children Jack, Oliver and Samantha, who adored him. His last words, to Mervyn, were: “Why are there so few grouse in Scotland? I want you to find out.” More than 750 friends attended a memorial service on what would have been Chappers’ 72nd birthday.

David Chaplin, born October 6 1951, died August 3 2023
