The marriage took place 20 Oct 2008, in London between Charles Montagu
Liddell-Grainger (b 23 Jul 1960), son of the late David Ian Liddell-
Grainger (descended from the Earls of Lindsey & Abingdon), by his
former wife the former Anne Mary Sibylla Abel-Smith (b 1932), and Dr
Martha Margaretha de Clermont.

The witnesses were Mr and Mrs Miles Huntington-Whiteley and Prince and
Princess Dimitri Lobanov-Rostovsky. .—A luncheon was held at Hélène
Darroze at the Connaught. A service of blessing will be held in
December at St James's Palace.

David's mother is a daughter of Col Sir Henry Abel Smith, KCMG, KCVO
DSO (descended from the Dukes of Somerset), by his wife the former
Lady May Helen Emma Cambridge, daughter of the 1st Earl of Athlone by
his wife HRH Princess Alice of Albany, daughter of HRH The Duke of
Albany, son of HM Queen Victoria.

He married firstly, 23 Jan 1992 (div 1999) at the Chapel Royal,
St.James' Palace, Karen Humphreys (b.Lagos 8 May 1956) .

Was Royal consent under the terms of the Royal Marriages Act published
in a recent London Gazette?

I've met Charlie socially on several occasions. He's often at
'Chapel' (ie The Chapel Royal, St James's) if he's in London at the
weekend. Also know Karen (Ka Ka) the first wife, another frequent
Chapel attendee. I know his mother Anne, now largely devoted to
missionary work in the deeper recesses of Africa but she makes annual
visits to London and has a base in Kennington (Duchy of Cornwall land
- but definitely not a grace and favour flat!), which is near the
former home of The Queen Mother's late Steward, 'Backstairs Billy'
Tallon. I knew Sir Henry and Lady May Abel-Smith in the later years of
their lives and occasionally visited them at their home on the edges
of Windsor Great Park. Lady May was a lovely woman and much like her
mother, Princess Alice, in later life. Absolutely no 'air' to her at
all. I once saw her 'whip out' a compact and lipstick to 'repair' her
make-up before going into lunch at a country pub! Her funeral and
interment at Frogmore brought out quite a gathering of Royals,
including a large Dutch contingent. I've met the new Mrs L-G
fleetingly and she seems a perfectly charming lady. I wish them much
happiness. They've been a couple for several years now.

Enough of the reminiscences! Let's flesh out the info!

Charlie is of course The Queen's third cousin once removed, through
their common descent from Queen Victoria. They also have an Abel Smith
kinship through a common descent from Abel Smith, the banker, which
makes Charlie The Queen's fifth cousin once removed. Mrs Miles
Huntington-Whiteley is another cousin (second, to be precise). She was
born Her Illustrious Highness the Countess Victoria Castell-
Rudenhausen and is descended from the 2nd Duke of Albany. Her husband
is a scion of the Huntingdon-Whiteley baronets (cr UK 1918), whose
mother Lady Pamela Margaret Baldwin was the dau of the Prime Minister
Stanley Baldwin (1st Earl Baldwin of Bewdley). I'm unclear whether
there's a close genealogical connection with either of the other
witnesses, Prince and Princess Dimitri Lobanov-Rostovsky. The Prince
is a descendant of Sir Walter Acton, 2nd Bt (now the Barons Acton of
Aldenham) and son of Prince John Lobanov-Rostovsky, whose wife Roxanne
was the dau of Prince & Princess Raoul Bibica-Rosetti (sometime Greek
Ambassador to Canada). Princess Raoul (Dorothy)'s branch of the Actons
appear to have married extensively into the wider European
aristocracy.

Consent to the marriage was given at a Privy Council meeting on 9th
October:
Consent to the marriage was given at a meeting of the Privy Council on
9th October 2008:
Declaration of Consent to the marriage of Charles Montagu Liddell-
Grainger and Martha Margaretha de Klerk. Order directing that the
Instrument signifying consent be entered in the Books of the Privy
Council.

Thanks for the info. Is the bride de Klerk or de Clermont?

As I said, our meeting was fleeting. The friend who might night the
answer to that is out of the country (UK) at the moment. I'll ask when
he's back

Dimitri Lobanov-Rostovsky is a 14th cousin of Charles Montagu Liddell-
Grainger
Indeed,
Jacques de Daillondu Lude and Jeanne d'Illiers
Just de Tournon and Jeanne de Vissac are at the same time
ancestors of the 15th generation of Charles Montagu Liddell-Grainger
ancestors of the 15th generation of Dimitri Lobanov-Rostovsky

That's interesting, thanks Olivier. Good to know it was an all-family
occasion!

Very nice. Only a small request. Could you break up your information
on each witness into a paragraph for tired and confused eyes such as
mine?

Thanks.

According to the Royal Consent, she is de Klerk. Not sure if that
helps!

I had lunch with a member of the family at the weekend who tells me
the blessing will take place at The Chapel Royal, St James' on 19
December. David's mother, Anne, will return to the UK for the
ceremony.
We discussed the Clermont/Klerk connundrum. My friend's view is former
was probably her maiden name and latter the name of her first husband.
